That Japan only GPS add-on for the PSP doesn't look so Japan only anymore. Sony's CES page lists the GPS system, leading most to believe the peripheral, already out in Japan, will get a Western release. Here's how the Sony site describes it:
Explore the world with GPS on your PSP. Utlizing the GPS peripheral and the latest mapping software on UMD, your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides. With an easy search feature and customizable settings, GPS on PSP is the easiest way to navigate new areas and cities.
Nice that Sony seems to be bringing its Japan only stuff to everyone else. Who's interested in picking this up?

I would be interested, if the BMW didn't already have this.
/shrug
The lack of a touchscreen might make this a little hard to use while driving.
Would be nice if they had a good dashboard mount for the PSP that dosn't make it look completely wrong. However, apart from the Touch, theres not much else I would want to carry around with me. PSP is not used too often any more on trips, so don't know if I would find it useful. Maybe if the price was right... We shall see...
Rather than having a device that keeps track of where I am, I'd much rather have a device that keeps track of where other people are.
Well, I just got a GPS unit for Christmas, so that's not exactly helpful, but...good for the people who will get some use out of it. GPSes are a lifesaver.
@dunetiger: carful paranoia kills lol jk.
idk i may use this.
@Scazza: I'm sure mounts wouldn't be too far behind.
@Raziel3333:
Oh, it's not paranoia. I just think the GPS thing isn't so fancy anymore. We gotta take it to the next step!
@dunetiger: Called a Cell Phone, lol. Ask your local government how it works!
I have been waiting for this for a while. Other than the lack of a touch screen, which not all GPS have, It should not be half bad. I'll buy it.
@dunetiger:
why do you want to track other people?
are we going to see a post on Kotaku about you stalking someone in the near future???
I might since I get lost in the SF bay area easily.
@jp182: Umm, Kotaku are the ones who hired him to stalk J Allard...
This doesn't require me to own a PSP slim does it? I don't want to upgrade just yet :(.
I'm totally getting it.
oh....gooooooooodness please please release this here in the u.s.
how much more raping will sony continue to do to their systems?? but by all means let the raping continue!
@chainlink13: I wouldn't be surprised. Everything else seems to be. ⌐_⌐
@Scazza:
Sad but true!
@chainlink13: No it doesn't.
And cool beans. If i didn't already have a gps.
I'm curious to see if this is really a feature most people who own PSPs in the states really want or not, will be interesting. Might be handy for finding escape routes when you acquire a stalker, as Sony's "Dude Get Your Own!" advertisements imply occurs any time you dare to play in public.
no the top units are made to fit on both the regular and Slim units
I had the Japanese one.
It was pretty worthless lol. At least I was able to sorta use it with MGS:PO+
I have GPS functionality already, but only on a laptop. It works, but it's way too cumbersome for "every day" use.
With remote play, the PSP has been looking more and more attractive of late. If they released this in Australia (along with the skype functionality), I'd probably be buying my first hand-held.
@RRoD:
I don't get it. Who's doing the raping and to what? I haven't seen sony rape a system of theirs yet.
Cept the 40 gig PS3. They may have molested and fondled it a little.
On topic, I like this idea of a GPS. Every day, Im that much closer to breaking down and dropping a cashwad on a PSP.
@Witzbold: What sort of problems were there?
I spent a few weeks in Yokohama (installing an exhibit at the NYK shipping museum), and noticed that most of the smaller streets didn't seem to even have names. I imagine that'd certainly be an issue. o.O
The PSP has been looking better and better to me as of late, with a new handful of games coming down the pipe, etc. etc. I'm not ready to jump ship quite yet, but something may happen soon.
This doesn't appeal to me at all, though.
@RRoD:
Clarify?
I'd buy it... Always wanted a GPS unit, and my PSP is just collecting dust.
seems like a cheap way to get a decent GPS unit
Love my PSP, probably end up picking his up more as a toy then anything else.
I don't know about your taste in games, but if you like RPG, especially S-RPGs, the PSP is friggin' gold.
I get all excited when I see a GPS module for my PSP, but I can tell you right now I wouldn't buy it as I just don't have much need for it.
Meh. Let me know when they plan on bringing the PSP camera to the States.
This would cinch it for me. I'd buy it up quick. I would agree that the lack of touch screen would be highly annoying, but I would deal with it for the size of it.
Come on, Sony, make this happen.
is it free?
@kingclip: I'm thinking of picking up a PSP actually. I'm a huge J-RPG fan and I need my Disgaea fix on the go.
Do I need a gps though?
Maybe when I get a car...
@Scazza:
I wouldn't make the news. I don't even like driving for half an hour let alone 40 hours straight. Tee hee.
neat, tbh this would be really useful
I could care less about the gps.
Just give us the TV tuner here in the US, and that will get lots of people to buy PSPs.
[www.engadget.com]
Don't see it as too useful - it won't replace the GPS in the car, and I would not want to walk around in the woods with it. Maybe a couple of years ago when dedicated GPS was a lot pricier.
@Doshu: yeah no names, and the fact that when I used it in meguro, it thought I was at Tokyo station lol.
I'm interested in this for the car with a mount for sure.
@UnJamma6096: Can't until after 1/1/2009 when all TV goes digital. Would be pointless befre then.
I think these are going for around $60 in Japan...
If you already own a PSP, that seems a reasonable price for a GPS.
Assuming the price doesn't change too much..
I too picked up one of these when I was in Japan. It had some minor issues with locating satellites when I was in Tokyo, but worked fine outside the city.
I've been waiting for them to release the US UMD so I could use it again.
Finally a reason to keep my PSP with me in the car, and not have to lie to the cops about it!!! Win freakin' win!
I want it for Metal Gear Portable Ops
The psp is a useful piece of machinery i must say
GPS? I could be tracked by my wife...
I think me....I would take it.
I'd just like to say thanks for this submission to break the streak of seven Microsoft posts in a row ;)
This is going to be awesome.
Hopefully the interface the GPS navigation is easy to use and looks good. Now I can see a lot of 3rd party accessories companies creating car cradles for the PSP...
If it's less than $100, I would seriously consider purchasing this.
They should make a deal with MapQuest or Yahoo!Maps. That oughta sweeten the purchase a lot.
All this psp news is really gettin me down. I dont think anyone actually owns a psp , so it's safe to move on now. :)
