The latest shots of Sega and Sumo Digital's console and handheld tennis effort, Sega Superstars Tennis, have sparked great conflict within. Should we be angry at Sega, firing off bitter, expletive laden e-mails and befouling its name on message boards for taunting us with a half-assed reintroduction to seemingly forgotten characters like Jet Set Radio's Beat? Or should we just be content that the publisher isn't handing off development duties on a third stylish futuristic inline skating adventure to a Western developer who specializes in boxing games? Still haven't decided. Help us figure out if we should be grumpy or simply thankful with 20 new screens of Sega Superstars Tennis for Xbox 360.

I guess you could say I'm angry. Meh, I'm not to excited for this one :P
I think I might be able to summarize the entire thread by saying:
Wtf?
.......
...eh.
i mean, at this point, sega doesnt seem to be doing a whole helluva lot with its beloved characters, so if we get Alex Kidd's Miniature Golf Adventures packed in with Ryo Hazuki's Pachinko!, really, im just gonna kinda sigh and say "well, at least they left Phantasy Star out of this one."
My god, I love Jet Set Radio so much. But Beat looked 10x better on the Dreamcast, haha. He doesn't really work without cel-shading unless you let a talented 3d artist remake him in a new style... It's not enough to take the DC model and smooth it up with more polygons.
Glad they didn't throw their crappy artists at Gum :0
Why won't they just make another sequel already?!
"seemingly forgotten characters like Jet Set Radio's Beat"
Gone, but not forgotten. JGR and JSRF are still two of my favorite games, and I know I am not alone in this regard. Here's hoping JSRF makes it to the 360 as part of the Xbox Originals setup and everyone gets a second chance to buy it and show SEGA the demand exists for a third title. Of course with dev Smilebit dissolved into SEGA at large, who knows how that would turn out.
man JGR is one of the many reasons my dreamcast does not get unhooked ever.
No PSO references?
EPIC FAIL.
@Nohman:
Hear hear, heck I'd buy another Jet Set Radio game but an Xbox Original switchover would be even nicer. Heck, I think I may check the Xbox Compatability chart now and see if I can get it on the cheap...
SEGA is really slipping. It's sad to see. The head guys at SEGA need to get slapped around until they figure out that they have great mascots that they could make great games with, yet they settle for mediocrity.
OMFG its BEAT from JSR!!!!
I MUST HAVE THIS GAME NOW!!!! @___@
*has a heart attack*
now, all we need is JSR 3 :D
I have a feeling this will be meh which is sad Sega has a good Tennis Franchise "Virtua Tennis" to work with.
god damn it, they need to stop lolly-gagging about. where the _fuck_ is my Jet Set Radio 3 ? if I had a billion dollars I would privately fund production of a Dreamcast II, and JSR3...and maybe a Shenmue 3 while I'm at it
I would be happy knowing that a this western company isn't working on the next Jet Set being as they may not understand the concept of love.
Damn them! How dare they tease us with a glimpse of what JSR would be like on these modern machines only to have it shattered by putting a tennis game in there instead. Sega you have failed me for the second last time...
It's cool that they're actually using some of these great characters for something. But Aiai, Ulala, Robotnik, and Sonic all playing tennis together is just bizarre.
I think this is a fantastic idea. People will buy it for Sonic, and then be unwittingly introduced to other characters in the Sega roster — and that could open the door just a little bit wider for a sequel to Jet Set or Space Channel to squeeze through. Anything that gets these characters more face time with the masses is good in my book.
Not to mention that the Wii version seems to be shaping up to be the version of Wii Sports Tennis that everyone wanted - motion racket control plus moving your character with the nunchuck. So Sega, hurry up and get this game out before Mario Tennis shows up!
Let them leave JSR and Shenmue (and Streets of Rage and so on...) alone. They fucked up NiGHTS already.
I wanna see Ryo Hazuki and Lan di duke it out once and for all. Wether that involves tennis balls or martial Arts. It better be handled soon!
SHENMUE <3
What the hell, man?
That's all I got to say.
Dammit, they have so many good characters....Just put them all in a good game. No one likes tennis games.....
I'm just going to pretend Yakuza 3 is the only game they have coming out. This game you're showing me here has horrible art direction and more issues, but I'm going to stop there.
@UnJamma6096: Actually tennis games are huge in Japan. Although shitty Sega tennis games will probably still sell bad everywhere.
Sega has seen better days.
I'm I the only one who feels that this game should belong on the wii..
and they might as well make a NIGHTs for the 360...
it's nice that they haven't forgotten about jet set radio, ...
JSRF SEQUEL NOW PLEASE!!!
All I'm gonna say is JSR + WiiMote spray-paint controls seems like a perfect match.
Sega has quite a few great franchises, yet it somehow manages to screw things up with it's less than stellar development studio. It's mind boggling to me how they could go from making Sonic Adventure, JSR etc, to Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.
Hate the "normal" Beat model. Why not keep it cel-shaded?
Rage 4 on the DS FTW (done in 2d Graphics of course)
Assholes!
Ok, at first I thought "?" to the articles comments, and then I saw the pictures....
Damn that is a beautiful, and painfully nostalgic re-creation of Tokyo-to. If only... perhaps the Wii and its massive succes will give us hope (Although I'd personally prefer a more visually spiffy version).
Looks like I'm gonna have to get this, as long as its a fun game. Thanks for the JSR nod Sega. How about Shinobi!!! Perhaps we'll see Beat in thier as well?
Shit.
Now I have to start thinking about how empty my life is without Jet Set Radio again.
Thanks, Sega.
If it plays like Virtua Tennis, then I'm all for it.
i have no 360, and this game looks pretty lame, but i think i need it just because it includes Beat...
Beat needs to be cel-shaded, but otherwise he looks good. The JSRF stage is good and the Nights stage has trippy potential. I will at least rent this. It's been said before, at the very least, it'll be a Virtua Tennis clone.
Anything is better with Ulala. I miss you, baby...
Please, can I have a third Space Channel 5? PLEASE!!!
if this plays like the game Rockstar made for Wii (title escapes me at the mo), it should be really fun.
And I'm a sucker for classic Sega franchises; let's hope Sega doesn't ruin their mascots any more than they already have.
What a terrible backdrop.
Besides the Nights backdrop, nothing is recognizable.
What happen to the awesome environment of Sonic's "Marble Zone" or maybe encased in a tube underwater with Ecco swiming around.
Bah humbug, Only VT's mechanic can save this game now.
@Fyren: You're telling me Shibuya-cho and the obvious Samba De Amingo levels aren't recognizable?
To anyone who has played JSR, Shibuya-cho is immediately recognizable.
@krunkjuice:
Uh, Sega makes the best tennis games in all of gaming. Virtua Tennis 3 is fantastic (and $12 at Target now).
This is also being handled by the the Virtua Tennis team so I see no reason to be afraid.
Really, the sheer amount of bandwagon hate here, with zero thought involved, is disgusting.
Well, at least Sega is putting some more eastern and creative style into this game. I likes!
@Fyren:
Wow, apparently someone hasn't played Super Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Samba de Amigo and Sonic the Hedgehog 2..
I think this game looks great. The fact that the Virtua Tennis team is making it only adds to that.
