For anyone looking to make a bit of dough from day trading or, say, long-term investment in THQ, you may want to take a look at The Street's picks for the biggest video games of 2008. Profiled are many of the new year's money-grubbingest titles, many of which were originally scheduled to arrive in 2007. Picks include Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto IV, THQ's Saints Row 2, Nintendo's Wii Fit and EA's Spore, nearly all sure things for big, big sales and arguable "killer app" labels.
Oddly, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is overlooked for the Wii, a game whose success is all but guaranteed on the sales leading platform. A handful of 2008 potential candidates, Resident Evil 5 and Blizzard's possible offerings in Wrath of the Lich King and StarCraft II, also deserve attention.

Can I please have LBP now? Please?
i really hope resident evil 5 makes it debut for 2008.
@kingclip: I'll have what your having......
With a side order of Starcraft 2 please :)
i think they're forgetting 'legendary : the box'
I'm looking forward to LBP and even though I have a PS3 and a 360, I can't help but feel that LBP isn't going to acheive its potential, due to its platform.
I'm still unsure about LBP. It looks rather... unfulfilling. I like having set goals, and in the past, I've very rarely enjoyed a 2d platformer unless it was made by nintendo or rare.
I'd literally kill to see at least one fantasy/cutesy platformer or adventure on the PS3 that's not a movie spinoff. PLEASE?
Am I clinging so badly to the N64 era? Hell. I loved the first jak and daxter game, but hated (no... DESPISED) the sequels.
I CAN HAS WHIMSICAL PLACES 2 RUN FREE PEASE?
really? LBP being a huge seller? I think that the casual PS3 player will overlook it for the main reason most casuals overlook other downloadable games... You need to connect to the internet, go through a store online, and buy it. Most of the casuals I know with PS3s just play the single player games all day, and don't even have PSN names...
My money is on Spore under performing in terms of sales.
Aren't "lists of things" just the best?
@Lot krotan:
Since when has been a downloadable game? WTF?
I have a feeling LBP will have a fun single player element. Which is probably why the game is seeing delays.
With such a beautiful engine and awesome character designs, it only makes sense to offer a cool single-player element before setting gamers loose to make crazy levels on the interwebs.
Little Big Planet I mean.
I'll take LBP & MGS4 now plz
@ LOT KROTAN: The demo is set to be a download, not the actual game, which will be on the shelves all proper-like.
@Lot krotan: Its only rumored PSN, and you can gurentee it will hit retail aswell
Brawl will sell, but not as much as people anticipate. Just take 2007 as an example. Most Wii owners only got the system for Wii Sports. Galaxy is selling well, but not that well in proportion to the number of Wii's out there. I think this trend will continue, but that's just my opinion.
@hahnchen: My money is where your money is. I can see it being the biggest let down of 2008.
littleBigPlanet on the other hand....mmmmmm!
ID's Rage???? hmm nevermind i think that is in 2009
Duke Nukem Forever? yeah, more like never...
haha just kidding...
How about Guild Wars 2? I hope that sales a lot ;[
yeah saints row 2...you can sugar coat a turd, doesn't mean it's candy.
2008 - The year of PLAYSTATION 3.
Let's see...2 PS3 exclusives and a multi-plat game. PS3 has no games?
@zombieistired:
As much as I'd love to agree with you about Guild Wars 2. I thought the beta wasn't coming till fall, so chances of it making into 2008 are slim. Looks like there's one more wintersday festival yet to be had
@noyd_mcbennet: Saints Row was a blast ... it got relatively good reviews (82% on GameRankings) and has a pretty strong following. I'll definitely be picking it up, and I'm pretty discriminating when it comes to those kinds of games.
@noyd_mcbennet:
someone never played Saints Row 1. San Andreas was the turd that it sugar coated...
I think that we'll see decent sales of Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, and Sonic RPG on DS. Not to mention Animal Crossing Wii. Man, is it just me or did he forget a lot of games?
@sascha23:
ahh I see. I thought it was a PSN game.
@Sollus:
LBP is going the same way Warhawk did, you can either download it off the store or buy the disc version. Plus user-created levels will have to be downloaded which I think is what he's getting at. If you want a challenge you'll have to log in and peruse a list of levels to download aside from what comes with the game
@Lot krotan: uh yeah i played it and i thought it was a sack of dog shit. why else would i be so pessimistic about the release of the sequel? it's THQ. but hey enjoy playing with feces.
@Alith: Like J&D 1 but hated the sequels? Are you freaking crazy?!?!? I can understand liking...none of them. But...man, you gotta remember to take your antipsychotics in the morning!
I'm curious if LittleBigPlanet is really going to make the money people are expecting it to. I certainly hope it will, because it looks great, but I wouldn't call it a sure thing at all.
@Lot krotan: also must i remind you that if it weren't for the GTA series, saints row and its near-identical game play would probably not exist? it's a fucking mirror image of rockstars franchise..
da da da na na da da da na na da da da na na da da da da PEWWWWWWWWW...
10 bucks to anyone who can comprehend what them this is from....
Little Big Planet has to be one of the most 'Squeeee-inducing' games I've ever seen. It's so cute!
I apologize for the overly twee reaction. :D
@noyd_mcbennet:
@Lot krotan:
now now boys lets compromise, both games were crap. If you want to see stuff like those games provided, watch the news. If GTA wants to be taken seriously they need to stick with what got them there, the Mafia
I can't see LBP or MGS4 being the huge system movers that people keep championing them to be. MGS4 seems to be just too much of a niche game for it to really be the killer app that Gears or Halo were. LBP might do better as it'll have a broader appeal, but with such a relatively small install base, it's not exactly going to rock the sales chart for an extended period of time.
Now I'm not saying they won't be good, and as much as I loathe the PS3, Uncharted didn't look half bad and Warhawk seems like it would be my sort of game. I'm just looking at this from the perspective of someone who isn't a hardcore gamer and might pick up a game every month, if even. Those two games just don't seem to scream "BUY A PS3".
Ok, so this is just some stupid, invalid list. How is LBP going to make more money than Brawl?
@jip100:
Rumor was that it was going to be a cheaper version on PSN first, and give the players a month or two to make some cool levels. Then, they will take the top rated levels, slap them onto a BluRay, and sell it retail.
What about Street Fighter IV? Is that not expected to be a 2008 title? It's up there on my most wanted list...
Many investors already account for this type of information and it's "priced" into the current stock prices. Certainly the companies have already accounted for it with their quarterly "guidance"...
This is yesterdays news to a seasoned investor.
@Sparx88: plz, bro.
@jihadjoe343:
On the contrary. I've only played the first Metal Gear and can't wait to get back into the series with 4. LBP also appeals to me although if you knew me that'd be a real shock to you because I'm not a cute and cuddly gamer. I won't even touch Katamari with a 10 foot pole. Yet these are just two of the titles that put me over the edge.
@jihadjoe343: Really? I have four friends who are waiting until MGS 4 comes out to buy their PS3. I'm sure they're not the only ones out there. MGS is a pretty huge franchise. Because millions of people love it, and those that do love it are willing to buy a console to get it.
I can't believe StarCraft II is not on the list... all of Korea will buy it, thats a lot of people you know. xD. But seriously, thats probably the most anticipated game of the PC coming out this year. And to say it won't make as much money as Saint's Row 2 which has a niche following?
Why is it that of the four or five lists I've seen like these for 2008 so far, that Fable 2 isn't in any of them? I understand this one I guess as RPGs are a smaller market than other genres, but why doesn't it make it to the 'top 25 games of 2008' lists and whatnot. Am I the only one who has any faith that the crazed maniac that is Molyneaux and his faithful team of wood-sprites might actually release a game that can't be completed in 2.5 hours? I have been looking forward to this game since mid 2006 and it seems to have been utterly forgotten. IMHO, the first Fable was a stellar game, it just didn't feel finished, so I regard it as an experiment more than a game. C'mon guys, show some F2 love! (or did they kick it back to 09 and I missed it?)
@bangbangblah: MGS WAAAASSSS a huge franchise, until Sam Fisher and Agent 47 gang-raped it into a useless pile of rubbish. Solid Snake has become Limp Snake. Sorry dude.
@jihadjoe343: You're not the only one to voice those concerns about MGS4. Sony and Konami are worried it will have too much niche appeal as well - especially considering the cost of the project. (Which is why I guarantee it will go to the 360 in 2009) It should move a few systems, though. Especially in Japan, where the PS3 is finally starting to get a little traction.
Also, Uncharted was surprisingly good. I wouldn't have bought the PS3 for it (did it for the Blu-Ray), but now I'm really glad I got that game. Ratchet & Clank turned out to be a pleasant surprise, but I know I'm preaching to the choir there.
And looking at that fun little list (apparently created by analysts who only know how to ride bandwagons) - I predict Fallout 3 will outsell Spore 2 to 1. Niche appeal again.
@jihadjoe343:
Um, what??? LBP bigger then MGS4??
Im no playstation fanboy, I don't own a ps3, but Im surrounded by fanboys who swear by this game. Hell, the majority of people I know who have a ps3 only bought it because of MGS4.
And when I ask said people about LBP, theyre like "What the hell is that?"
@Sparx88:
Ha, hit the nail on the head.
Hmm, this list seems very, very lacking. If I'm not mistaken, they missed Fable 2, Mass Effect 2, GoW 2, HL2:Ep3,Super Smash Brawl,apparently crysis on the 360,RS:V 2,
ahh I refuse to go on. Then again, a few of these are still not confirmed for 2008.
@MasterYong: Check out the 2008 previewon next-gen.biz for your dose of Fable 2 goodness.
@PapaBear434:
I thought the "demo" was going to be on PSN and the best levels from that would make it into the final retail game. Since people are paying for GT5 prologue, it's probably like you said Papa.
As cool as I think the game looks, I don't think it will be the huge hit everyone assumes it will be, but will be much like Ico.
LittleBigPlanet = Greatest game ever
@MasterYong: agreed on both counts and still laughing at your last. Snake Eater was aptly named (really let me down) - and I cringe every time I think of the wanna-be James Bond theme song - something about a tree frog.... MSG4 looks like it may get things back on track though. I suppose a lot of people liked 3, but I think the series has gotten to the point where it will get great reviews regardless of what Konami turns out.
@MasterYong:
Because Fable 1 was kind of a disappointment. Good game, but only about half of what was promised.
People are staying cautious about this one.
Yeah, I don't really see a ton of these pulling off 'killer' sales in the long run outside of GTAIV. Saints is arguably just a clone, depending on where it releases in comparison, it's sales may be cannibalized by that release.<
