Yeah, that first Tiberium screen didn't really count. It was more of an appetiser. This shit right here's the main course. A ton of screens - some from cutscenes, some clearly and honestly gameplay - for EA's upcoming Command & Conquer-based GRAW clone are on offer, which answer the question of who you'll be fighting as (the GDI) along with how big a deal this is to EA (looks bigger than the sideshow spin-off we originally anticipated). But enough chin-wagging! Please, enjoy.

I think it is going to be interesting to see if they can really blend both RTS and FPS gameplay elements together.
Anything like GRAW is welcome to me.
mm...it does look pretty. And surprisingly polished, for this stage in development.
@.endejas.:
I'm guessing it's renegade+republic commando?
Hm, lots of gray and brown. Is this game running Unreal Engine 3?
Lots of blues, backs, and browns. I could do with a little more color in the palette.
Given that this game is titled Tiberium, I'm a little suprised there isn't any green.
whoops...accidently clicked the reply link...
Needs more pylons.
@GenericKen:
Don't you know anything? Green isn't a next-gen color. Gray and brown are totally where it's at.
Sadly it won't run on mine. Damm need a new GPU.
@cyhborg: Pretty much, yeah
:-/
After Dune II, I had very high hopes for the original Command and Conquer back in the day, and for the most part it delivered. Ever since that first title, the designs for the units and the game world itself just kept going downhill (Red Alert was a bright spot.) The last C&C game had some ridiculous looking soldiers in power armor - a very poor one-off from Games Workshop.
These latest screens look great though, even if only from a design standpoint. Good looking grunts and bots - thumbs up to the concept art.
I still dont understand the color comments ... not everywhere is a rainbow.
You can just turn on the news and see Iraq and it is all sand brown ... real life has poor color direction I suppose.
@Archaotic: And I think it's pretty darn stupid. Sick of it actually.
Which developper will show us the first realistic game with the full range of colors?
@EnigmaNemesis:
My thoughts exactly, although I'm guessing mine are for a different reason than yours. I've just never been a C&C fan, having been console-specific since the early 90s, and thus this game just screams "another shooter" to me.
I take it you've played Renegade, though?
looks delicious, wondering like a lot of you if the RTS will be pulled off well. this is for ps3 at some point?
@QC8472:
Crysis, and it proves that hardware isnt up to snuff yet, looking realistic, with full range of colors.
But there are parts of real life, that are not full range and are well, real!
Middle East war for example.
@Archaotic:
Yes I have, was cool for the novelty factor (seeing all the RTS placements and vehicles up close and personal) ... and the online was awesome and ground breaking vehicle wise, but I was more into Unreal Tournament and Diablo II at the time.
Looks like Enemy Territory Quake Wars.
Even as a C&C fan im not feeling it, they are really going to have to do something to impress me with this "just another shooter" seeming title.
This could be the excuse I've been looking for to get into C&C- there's a collection w/ ever game at Best Buy on the cheap, might go for it now.
@blackadvent:
Make sure you get the one with C&C3 in it...
[www.ebgames.com]
C&C + GRAW + Titans + Orcas = sold.
Look's like EA's "got a present" for us!
@EnigmaNemesis:
Same here. The only PC games I was into back in the day were UT and Diablo 2 (both of which I played on the family Mac, ironically enough)...everything else was console for me.
I guess for me, though, this game is just critically underwhelming because I don't have any love for the C&C franchise, and squad-based shooters tend to bore me to tears. I don't see that changing with this game and its critically uninteresting art style. Your point on Iraq and parts of the world being drab and boring rings true, but that just serves to prove mine. Why can't developers, y'know, set games in other parts of the world than dusty brown plains or the burnt-out shells of cities?
yawn.....already saw this in GI. definatly looks and sound good though
Wow. I don't think I've ever seen ED-209 look THIS badass before.
@Archaotic:
Why can't developers, y'know, set games in other parts of the world than dusty brown plains or the burnt-out shells of cities?
Maybe a lot has to do with development time, etc.
Much easier to get a game up and running, and looking good I suppose with a less broader color pallet and not too crazy on the flora.
I mean look at Crysis, they nail it great and make it realistic, but it comes at a price, and that is hardware.
I agree though, I am not feeling it, and not too interested in squad based FPS games.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Agreed. It does seem like devs would rather take the easy way out and use a color palette of three or four colors than use a varied, expressive set of colors and visuals. The near-constant use of Unreal Engine 3 might also have something to do with it, as most UE3 games don't exactly seem to vary much in the visual department.
Ah well, this is a PC game, right? Just like Crysis, I'll probably ignore its existence except when people bring it up at my store.
*prays its good*
@Archaotic:
Yeah... but it is also slated for 360 and PS3 Fall of 08' as well.
Which is funny though, because UT3 has some marvelous color use (compared to Gears) unlike most that license the engine.
For C&C fans like me, this game is pretty much a godsend . I appreciate EA trying another go at a FPS or whatever this is after Renegade.
@blackadvent: Your missing out on Sole Survivor in those packs. Too bad there is no way to play that shit...
Yeah, I still have my Sole Survivor ... remember the easter egg to fight the Dinosaurs too?
"funpark" was it?
Aaaah, the memories, romping through this in Dos on my Dell XPS P120 with my Number 9 Motion 771 graphics card...
That, and Mechwarrior series ... Ghost Bear Clan for life!
Easter Egg was on the first CC disc BTW, I hope it is included in the new pack!
Anothe C&C FPS, i'm excited, I played Renegade for hours and hours
@Archaotic: The proper response here would be Zing.
I have to agree with you guys. This has an extremely boring color scheme. I would rather be blinded by constant bloom than look at this for 10-12 hours because at least those games are bright (too bright, yes but that's not what I mean). Resistance had a bigger palette than this for Christ's sake.
Mehhhhh...
Has EA every done anything other then drive good franchises into the ground?
@weasl:
no they suck worst company in the world dont buy games from them
About the color: Say what you will, but Halo did a nice range of color that was vibrant and realistic. Granted, I still have a freaking SDTV, so for me it actually looks better than COD 4, so what do I know?
@Sonic_and_Tails:
Good example ... Halo 3 was pretty vibrant and gorgeous!
I think most choose these colors like I said above, as well as try and convey a certain mood.
@Sonic_and_Tails:
"Say what you will, but Halo did a nice range of color that was vibrant and realistic."
Not to troll or anything, but I always found Halo's colour scheme (along with the munchkin voices of the enemies) to be very childish.
@EnigmaNemesis: True, I agree. I remember someone did a comparison of Halo and COD 4 screens, where they diluted the saturation of the color for Halo, and the Halo screenshots actually ended up looking more detailed and realistic.
Another game that comes to mind is Mass Effect. Certainly more reds, and not as many greys and browns. Still not exactly a wide range, but for a UE 3 game, I thought the design choice was good. Too bad the frame rate sucked...
Wouldn't it be nice if a game set in the future wasn't reliant on a doom-and-gloom atmosphere?
Hmmm, I'd like to see this is motion before I pass any judgments on it. Right now the graphics just aren't doing it for me, and I usually love the UE3 games. I'm guessing a new Ghost Recon will be announced by the time this game comes out so I'll probably just end up passing on it anyways.
@Captain Impulse: Those end up too colorful and kiddy, or our rigs just can't handle it.
@Black-Dog-Howls: Personally I think game designers are too fixed on the "save the universe" motif to offer anything with enough substance to carry itself to market success.
Heh, and in a bit of hypocrisy, I would pay good money for a worthwhile Ghost in the Shell game.
Have a friend that been working on this for a long, long, time. They really put a lot of effort into it at least design wise from the bottom up and I would like to see this working out.
As for the color schemes..You know you can't just through every color in the rainbow around willy nilly in one frame and get a good sense of design right?
I think what is said about Crysis or even something like Uncharted are good examples of the judicious use of color. Some levels have palettes that progress to other levels. Some are two-tone or monocromatic for a reason, others, warmer saturated tones in contrasting colors.
Another great example is R&C:Future. Multi-colors and good style. Devs are getting there, albeit, slowly, but they are. :)
Where is command conquer in this image? I fail to see a true orca, a true granade soldier, the hovercraft from the first mission, the zing turret, etc.. etc.. etc... all i see is generic future-is fantasy.
This is not even sci-fi, is metal all around people, more medieval knights than sci-fi.
This looks like Enemy Territory meets Call of Duty 4.
@JohnnyLA: Too bad nobody owns a PS3 or a computer good enough to run Crysis.
Honestly tho, I think people are FINALLY getting tired of every next gen game trying so hard to look next gen. It almost makes you miss when cel shading was the big design fad.
I just hope they dont' fuck this up like they did with bf2142.
@explodingman: The new fad is full-body cybercombat suits, it seems. Blame the Master Chief.
@Archaotic: EA Los Angeles acquired the rights for CryENGINE 2 in the beginning of the year from what I remember. Rumor has it, they are using it for Tiberium. Would explain why it's looking so "pretty" this early in development.
