I was thrilled to come across a most glorious article on Chinese MMORPGs (specifically, the wildly popular Zhengtu Online), translated to English from the original that appeared in the Southern Weekly. As Steve at PlayNoEvil sums it up, "While wimpy Americans can whine about "cheating" in online games, quibble about Real Money Transactions (RMT), complain about gold farming, gripe about power-leveling, and otherwise aspire to a mythical "purity" of game play, the most popular game in China, ZT Online, from Giant Interactive has embraced all of these things.. and online gambling to boot."
The main Southern Weekly article on ZT Online follows a gamer as she first becomes interested in the game, through her rise to power, and her eventual disillusionment with the money-sink it had become.Woven into the narrative are descriptions of the often shockingly brazen tactics ZT Online uses to soak the "RMB gamers" who would rather spend money than grind out levels. The picture resolves into that of an online casino dressed in the trappings of an adventure game, and Shi Yuzhu [the brain behind ZT] ends up looking a lot like a shady used-car salesman.
It's a really, really great (if somewhat lengthy) article from a number of perspectives - it's one of the better mainstream media articles I've read on gaming, though not without its flaws. But as the PNE commentary points out, the fascinating thing is how it turns a lot of ideas about 'good' MMORPGs upside down ... and is reaping major rewards. From the sounds of it, I doubt we'll be seeing it Stateside, but one never knows.

Am I the only one that hates MMORPGs?
Seriously. I get bored with every one I play. Especially WoW.
@OneManFreakShow: You're not alone. MMORPGs don't really hold my attention long enough for me to enjoy them.
If it acted as a honeypot to all the RMT and other crap, leaving the other MMOs mostly clear of them, then by all means bring it over.
@Hopanoe:
I generally love RPGs, but MMOs are way too "HEY KILL THIS TO GET THIS" for me. Besides, I want a story.
@OneManFreakShow: I can't stand them either. Get bored after a week or less and moves on. Guild Wars is the only one I play a bit every now and then, not very often though.
MMO's can be fun for me, but just as many seem kinda pointless.
I used to play Runescape, but anyone who knows much about its current state knows that they want to lose members now, or something, with the updates they've been throwing out. It was really a great game, but now...sheesh.
@Tuor: I guess you missed the point.
And otherwise aspire to a mythical "purity" of game play, Indeed.
Just finished reading the story, I love reading articles like this about MMO's, it makes everything seem so epic.
I love MMO's but atm i'm just waiting for another one to be released. WoW was good, but i think i'm just bored of the WoW universe now and want to play somthing new. WoW in a way has also spoilt me since when i tried to play some of the other MMO's i played before WoW i oculdn't help but compare them.
That sounds...like a really bad MMO.
The article seemed fairly biased towards making a point that seems contrary to the evidence. MMOs are supposed to be about being social and earning your character and status.
I think Blizzard is pretty satisfied with the market they have reached by appealing to people who actually want to play, rather than the kind of vapid consumers who just want a quick fix then ditch the game.
As a note, my comment is in regards to the gray "sidebar" Southern Weekly article portion.
The overall article reads more like a bizarre short story and I found it sort of weird and dramatized.
I enjoyed the article, thanks for linking it. I do wonder if there's a way to incorporate the whole "pay to skip the early levels" with the "standard" MMO fare for those who want to work through it, without game-breaking mechanics like it experienced.
The more I think about it the more it sounds like you pay for exclusive content that only paying people can go to to prevent the influence on the normal game... which just ends up kinda "meh." There has to be some medium, even if it isn't happy, right?
Well I suppose if we're lucky China will collapse into a sea of gamer lawsuits.
this is the worst MMO can be, totally designed to be substance abuse.
I know, I wish I'd thought of it actually.
@SSJPabs: me too!
(;_; )
Slightly off topic: Something that amazes me is people's burning need to contribute by informing others of either their lack of interest or lack of knowledge of the subject currently under discussion in any conversation.
Just look at the top 5 comments here.
It's like you're talking to a friend about computer hardware, and some person feels the pressing need to say: "Oh, I don't know anything about that computer stuff..lol". Or "That kind of stuff doesn't really interest me" when you weren't bloody talking to them in the first place...
Geez.. humans..
@Tarislar: or when people talk about things that the post wasn't even origionally about! am i right?! man i hate that!
(i'm only kidding Tarislar!)
The article itself was bloody interesting. A really long read, but worth it. Most interesting is the differences/similarities between Asian and western gamers. A lot of the issues that were noted with regard to Asian player behaviour are very much the same as western players, but it's expressed in a slightly different way.
There are so many things about this article I want to discuss.. I just don't know where to start.
@HAWAIIANACTOR: I'm just sick of every article featuring anything to do with WoW or MMOs in general starting off with a bunch of comments from people on how/why they hate MMOs.
It would be like me commenting on every thread involving FPS games and saying how I hate/don't play/am not interested in FPS games. It's annoying that I have to wade through this crap that people likely don't even realize they're doing.
The only MMORPG I've really enjoyed was Guild Wars...mostly because it didn't really have much grind, and power-leveling was pretty much useless.
wow, she spent way too much time and real money on that MMO. Pay to level, then pay to open chests for gear, and most chests offered crap? That game is a scam, no fun found anywhere in there. The creater, must be rolling in dough now, that bastard.
I like City of Heroes for the gameplay dammit.
Figures though. People looove wasting money.
Winning Tips I Use and Win
I play for Entertainment only, but there is a challenge to playing and being able to deposit $50, or $25, then get longevity in play for the small amount I deposit.
I also have my own Rule set in place for playing, and that is to CASH OUT when i get ahead, have it sent to my Neteller, then it gives me money to deposit at other casino's (playing the same exact way), then repeat what I did at the 1st casino. Also, it gives me money to make more deals with to earn more GG's to play on.
First, there is no such thing as a HIGH bet, and A Max bet per spin. NO-NO-NO !!!!!!
Bet sensible, bet small, hit many more smaller wins, let them build up, then cash out- YES- CASH OUT.
I play 99% of the time at MicroGaming casino's because my way of playing goes very far, and I do cash out daily fom #300 to 1k, sometimes more.
The last 4 days, between deals done(2) and deposits at FL casino's, I spend only $50 of my own money to get started, All the rest was from winnings at the 1st casino. I cashed out over 4k in those 4 days, and still have $$ in 3 of the casino's to play more later this week.
There is no special time to play, because I won and built these winnings during various times of the day/week/weekends. So, that is no way put into my way of play.
The games I found that my way works best are:
ISIS, Dolphins Tale, DinoMight, Loaded, Haloweenies, and Thunderstruck. (in that order)
My Way.
1. Play all lines. (ie 15/20/25/30/40 lines depending on the slot).
2. Play at 1(one) cent per line. (or 2 cents if brave).
Be in EXPERT Mode set at 100 or more spins in auto mode.
3. Coins per line: (I play 1 coin per line) sometimes when I double my deposit in winnings, then I go to 2 coins per line bet.
NOTE:
ISIS is a 25 line slot, so my bet per spin of the slot is only 25 cents x 100 or more spins.
Here is the key for sucessful winning at these games.
KEY= Free Spin Feature= In Dolphins Tale and Loaded, and the best results for getting better payouts are by choosing 25 spins in Dolphins Tale, and 25 spins in Loaded.. Why?
I hit more wild symbols x5 or 5 of anything in these selections giving you an automatic win of anywhere from $25 up to $680 for just that 1 spin, then you have all the remaining spins to go and win more.
When I finish all the free spins, if my total is over $200, I go to the bank and cash out 1/2 of what I won, then return to the same game.
Cashanova plays the same way. I'm looking at other games and trying this on, and it works with any of the games I have tried so far.
Believe me when I say I have tried playing at Max bet, max $$, and I lost so fast, but the minute I went back to this way of playing, I won, and I built it back up to where I was. So, play smaller for longevity in play.
This way can win from a Bonus of $10 won from here at , because I cashed out 1k from a $10 win from here...
Playing this way I have played 3 days and cashed out over $500, and still left $152 to play on later. (its still in the casino).
I HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU PLAY LONGER AT MICROGAMING CASINO'S, AND I REALLY WISH YOU LUCK IN GETTING MORE VALUE FOR YOUR DOLLAR WHILE PLAYING.
Good LUCK to you
WIN BIG, but more importantly, have fun...
Scratchers2u/littlejohn
Now, I am testing ways of play at other casino's like Hot Pepper and others to find easy ways of winning there too.
