Not so long ago we mentioned a rumor that Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters might come from the PSP to the PS2 after it had appeared on GameStop's website for $29.99 with a February 2008 ship date.
Now the plot thickens! While we've heard nothing official from Sony or Insomniac regarding the title, GameSpot has updated their page with box art. And even the ESRB has jumped on board by adding the title to their database.
While Size Matters may have induced my most heartbreaking gaming moment of 2007, it also gave me the best experience on the PSP this year. And the experience was complete enough to imagine it on a full-blown console.
I'm just curious—the PSP version of Size Matters used a larger Ratchet to make up for screen size. Will Insomniac tweak the perspective? The PS2's beefier processing power should certainly support a wider level view and a smaller protagonist, so I'm guessing that they will. As for the brilliant "size matters" pun, that part might not translate so well.

Squee. :D
I'm not going to be playing Tools of Destruction any time soon, so this is nice.
Seems that Sony is porting a lot of the PSP's games to the PS2. I think it should be the other way around. If a game on the PSP is on PS2 it may keep people from purchasing a PSP. Just looking at things from a business standpoint.
Though, FFT and Disgaea are reason enough to own a PSP, in my opinion. Portable versions of two of the greatest SRPG's ever? I'm sure those sold some PSP's.
Sweet, now I won't have to buy a PSP for the new God of War. I like the way you think Sony.
The game that I miss the most not having a PSP is coming to PS2! Excellent! No PSP purchases for me!
while im half happy to see this (still need to get me a psp, but if they all come to ps2 than im fine). u can bet against gow coming to ps2. no way would they risk anything in a port for that game.
btw, where is my daxter port?!?!?!?!
@swirldude: Agree! I'm a Ratchet whore.
R&C = made of fun
Christ Sony, get with the fucking program already. Continuing to support the PS2 isn't going to gain you any more significant market share. Continuing to siphon off the PSPs best and brightest exclusives will lose you some market share, though.
Sony has shot themselves in the foots with the whole PSP to PS2 thing so many times they don't even have any toes left.
They never should have allowed Rockstar to port Liberty City Stories, it just set an extremely bad precedent.
@dontEATnachos: lol, good one. But I'm still gonna get GOW PSP since I'm gonna be on the road alot.
@Nightshift
The PS2 provides sony with cash though, and they need that money with the losses they incur with the PS3.
Also how does a home console kill a portable console's market share. I disagree with you on that point, they are in two seperate markets.
This PSP to PS2 trend is pretty much the end of me buying action games for the PSP.
Blech, I did not allow R&C to taint my PSP, nor will I allow them to taint my PS2 (again..) The first one was garbage, even if the game was visually outstanding. Good looking garbage is still garbage. I learned my lesson! Just my opinion.
@Ryadic: But thats what the PSP has been pretty much.... most of its games have been retreads or just new installments/ports of PS1/PS2 games.
@David_TheMan (The Original): Read every other post on this topic or any other like it (Silent Hill, Syphon Filter, etc.). They all state essentially the same thing: "Sweet! Now I don't have to buy a PSP!"
If one doesn't own Console A, but can replicate enough of its library on Console B to be satisfied, then where's the incentive to purchase Console A?
@David_TheMan (The Original):true they are two seperate markets, but there have already been a couple people saying :no need to buy a PSP now!" i get what you are saying, but if you have a system seller like this one, it kinda sucks to lose that exclusivity, different markets or not...
@nightshift
The last time I checked the PS2 was still selling quite a few systems. So, why not do some port-overs? Developers aren't exactly focusing a lot time on making NEW PS2 titles (nor should they). And besides, Sony ain't stupid. They know that the primary uses for the PSP is to be hacked and run emus, with the secondary purpose of accenting the kewlness of the PSP/PS3 remote capabilities.
@David_TheMan (The Original): Let me disagree with you,if Sony continue supporting PS2 the way they are,the slower transition to the PS3 will continue,take the example for the quote of units sold this season,PS2 sells better than his big,new brother,that´s no right if Sony want the big jump right now,Accept it or not Sony cannibalize their own market at this time,what we should expect later? PS2 ports from PSP´s Crisis Core,God of War Chain of Olympus,Dissidia,etc...?That fact can scare some people from buy a PSP.While bother in do that if they can wait for his PS2 ports?piss me off...
Yeah,maybe this whole thing of the ports is because the low software sales on the PSP but...WTH...>:|
@havaiianactor & @Nightshift_nurse
I know it is tempting to look at what people in here post, but that is in no way a reliable indicator of what the market is, so I think it is best to disregard what is being said.
Last time I checked the PSP was starting to pick up a larger userbase, so people are not stopping themselves from buying them, they are buying even more.
Sony supporting the PS2 is a good thing. They don't abandon their hardware like Nintendo and Microsoft. Expect this support for PS3 when it becomes a senior citizen.
@Kyle81: I think most is a broad statement. Most of it's more successful games would be a better one. But there are still a lot of great PSP games. MGS Portable ops, Daxter, Mercury, and Lumines (which is everywhere now) to name a few.
But I love my PSP, and not for the games. For the homebrew and portable movies.
@DigitalHero: They supported the PSone even when the PS2 was beginning. I remember I bought a PS2 with GTA3 and MGS2 and saw a whole slew of new releases at Best Buy for the PSone. The PS2 is just too successful to stop supporting it until the PS3 sells better and gets more games.
Huzzah!
More R&C for poor/stingy gamers everywhere!
I have both versions of LCS and I find it more enjoyable to play on my PSP than PS2. I find it bit surprising because I prefer big screen TV over small screen (the psp to tv output does not help much because the ratio size is screwed up). I guess it is easier to get things done playing LCS on PSP because I don't have to "reserve" the TV.
At least if it's released on the PS2 it'll have better camera/movement controls... I hope.
Whoever's doing the port better take advantage of the second analog stick!
Sony's slowly becoming the next M$ when it comes to milking so-called platform exclusives.
@David_TheMan (The Original): No good can possibly come from cannibalizing the PSPs stable of AAA exclusives. And while the user base for PSP hardware may be increasing at a rapid pace, software isn't catching up to it. Sony isn't helping the situation by removing so much of the allure of titles you simply can't play anywhere else.
A much smarter move would be to simply do what was done during the PS1 to PS2 era of transition. Just localize all the titles that didn't pass muster during the heyday of the system...or snap up the ones that are still coming out. It was that period in the PS1's lifecycle (going from transitional to defunct) that saw the release of One Piece Mansion, Castlevania Chronciles, Final Fantasy Origins, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Dragon Ball Z Ultimate 22, etc.
@Nightshift_Nurse: correction: "no lasting good..."
@Nightshift_Nurse
I don't agree. Again there is no evidence to suggest that the PS2 is canabalizing sales of PSP games, and there is historical knowledge that handhelds and consoles are two different markets that don't affect each other, like console and PCs.
I see no reason why they should not share the game wealth between the two systems since they both serve two different markets. Its more money for sony and no negatives.
why the psp version has high review? is it because there are so few good games on psp?
I think daxter feels a lot better than ratchet on psp, it's not as clear or sharp, but the characters and environment look a lot more vivid.
@David_TheMan (The Original): There's no historical precedent for a handheld and a console that could freely port software from one system to the other with virtually no loss in quality (or necessity for enhancement).
Secondly, plain common sense dictates that if one already own a game system that features a great number of games also present on another console, there's far less incentive to buy that second console. We've already seen this in action when Vice City Stories sold a fraction of what Liberty City Stories did, and virtually every opinion on the matter pointed to the expectation that it would later be ported to the PS2.
It's happened already. And it will continue to happen as long as Sony makes the boneheaded decision to port its exclusives to a dying system.
The only possible good I can see coming out of this (and maybe it's been Sony's plan all along) is to string people along with "new games" for the PS2 until the PS3 drops to a price that many of these gamers find appealing.
The problem is once again though it's at the potential expense of PSP software sales. I can only hope that Sony isn't stupid enough to green light God of War and Crisis Core for PS2 release...those are the closest things that system has to a Halo or a Pokemon and they need to remain exclusive.
But maybe you're right and in the end it won't matter much. Being in second place frequently does allow for a smoother transition into a strong lead, and lord knows Nintendo is going to be forced to compete against itself between supporting the DS and pushing it's successor for at least a couple of years after the debut of the PSP2. So maybe these decisions won't be all that damaging to the PSP after all. I guess we'll just have to wait and see (though I stand unwaveringly by the GoW/CC assertion).
@David_TheMan (The Original):
It also provides them with profit. And license fees off an installed base of 120 million potential units to sell to doesn't hurt. Does this make sense now?
The idea of R&C: Size Matters on the PS2 really rubs me the wrong way. Size Matters was one of the main reasons I shelled out the cash for a PSP. Now it's (probably) getting ported to PS2? I know it's a good thing, over all...just, y'know...GRAAARGH. -_-;;
Sure, playing it on a bigger screen and with improved controls would be nice. But then I already got EVERYTHING in the PSP version. As fun as it would be -- Ratchet & Clank never gets boring to me -- I don't think I'm going to buy the game a second time, even if they add any extra content.
@maximus9: The bulk of what's ported over are first-party titles though. Would license fees even be a factor?
I'm not saying I think the PSP is a bad system, but this is the only game that I'd have wanted a PSP for. I will be pleased if it comes out for the PS2!
@David_TheMan (The Original): @Zunnoab: Look ZUNNOAB,this friend is ONE example about the wrong idea to port a PSP game,now he maybe never consider get a PSP...mmmhh???
Okay so Psp going to Ps2- Jeez when are we going to see Ps2 to Psp- What happened to Gt4 for Psp?
"Sweet, now I won't have to buy a PSP for the new God of War. I like the way you think Sony."
uhh..hold yer horses. From what I heard it's not even close to happening. Why would Sony want to compete with themselves on GOW:CoO when they are (probably) actively working on GOW3.
Someone needs to correct this. High Impact Games developed R&C:SM, not Insomniac Games. High Impact is also developing the new Secret Agent Clank title for the PSP. I don't know about the PS2 port but the PSP version was definitely very good.
BTW, I don't work for High Impact, Insomniac, or Sony. I just believe in giving credit where credit is due.
Yes, agreed wompy...
I have a friend who is a programmer at HI and they worked a good deathmarch crunch to get that out on the shelves and looking good.
"Seems that Sony is porting a lot of the PSP's games to the PS2. I think it should be the other way around. If a game on the PSP is on PS2 it may keep people from purchasing a PSP. Just looking at things from a business standpoint."
That's why they should port Crisis Core to the Wii
Yeah, Mark, Insomniac didn't make Size Matters for the PSP, so I'm fairly confident they won't be working on the port either.
High Impact is the one you should be crediting here.
