Yakuza 3 Trailer Is Long, Wordy

The soundtrack seems woefully inappropriate. But everything else, well, it's looking just fine. Sword-fighting and samurai always go down well at parties, and even those prolonged dialogue sequences should be worth a look-in once they're in English. Course, at the rate this series is appearing in the West, that might not be until 2012.

  • The soundtrack is only inappropriate if you didn't like Samurai Champloo. To that I would say, no taste because Sneak Chamber is one of the best beats I've heard in a long while.

At the rate this is going this game is going to be Vagabond meets The First Samurai meets Samurai Champloo which is all kinds of awesome.

  • I played a store demo of the first Yakuza game when it came out in Japan. I was a fan of the fighting and action, but the time inbetween spent listening to dialogue, reading, etc was painful.

Recently I purchased Yakuza 2, again the Japanese version, hoping it was better. Again, the theme was interesting but there were a few things that bothered me.

    1. It reminded me a lot of an old NES game where you had to run around some map before progressing to the next part. There was no action during this phase, or very little, and it was as maddening.
    2. Maybe it was just me, but I couldnt find a way to skip the movies. I dont know why developers insist on making me watch them - especially Japanese developers.
    3. It seemed to be a LOT like Max Payne.

These are probably the features that make this game successful but I hope they get toned down a little for those of us who simply don't appreciate it.

  • That child with the big eyes absolutely freaks me out.

  • @Black-Dog-Howls: I like the rap in the beginning but the pop music in the middle was incredibly inappropriate in my opinion. It reminded me of the time my friend was playing Battlefield 2 while listening to "Why can't we be friends".

I managed to understand one part of the dialogue (finally all those hours of subbed anime are paying off!). The girl wants him to kill Myamoto Musashi for her and in the end I think she is going to kill him for killing her mother (or at least a relative). But my japanese sucks so I wouldn't go taking my word as absolute truth.

  • Ryu ga Gotoku looks great.

I saw this some where else and man it does look like fun. THey have musashi! omg a game in japan can't happen with out him.

  • Well as the trailer states the main Character is MUSASHI, and all the epic battles will come to light with Kojiro Sasaki and all the cast from old literature! The music was nice and the pop was typical of Japanese drama today, I think that was Ketsumeshi. In anycase looking forward to this, thank god PS3 is region free! Can't wait till this comes out!

    >_< I hate myself for being so excited about this game. I do wish that I weren't illiterate... I can understand enough of the speech not to be horribly lost, but reading is another story. I just know that this game is going to take forever to get localized too. Everything about this game looks great, and as well all know, there will be turtle races!

  • This is alot more interesting than I gave it credit for.

  • No new video of the turtle racing? aww... Still looks like a great game though.

  • @siamgx: I thought the girl said she wanted Kiryu to kill Miyamoto Musashi...
But my Japanese isn't that great.
I really want this game though.

  • The soundtrack starts to fail at about 4:35 into the vid.

  • looks like a good game. sounds like a good story.

  • This is the video I saw. Looking good.

  • @THECELEANINGGUY: Yup, you're right. Kiryu and Musashi is the same guy.
The girl asked Kiryu to kill Musashi cos she believes that Musashi killed her family.

  • The hip hop song is done by the Grand father of J-Rap "Zeebra"

  • Indeed the beginning reminds me of Champloo, which is awesome too, but, wtf, it that Orange Range in the middle?

Anyway, looks like a killer must have game.

  • so, any news of the localization of yakuza 2 besides being announced?

  • "those prolonged dialogue sequences should be worth a look-in once they're in English."

    English subtitles, yes.

Seriously looking foward to this game. If the story is as well done as the first and second ryu ga gotoku games then the third one should be damned excellent.

Interested to see how the combat will play out with all the different styles they are putting in.

  • @Spiderbait: It's clear right from the start that the main character is her parents' killer but she doesn't know about it until that last few minutes in the trailer.

I am tempted to import but if the game involves reading a bunch of kanji then I'm a lost case.

  • Dear Sony,

Have you seen this trailer? This game right here is your fucking killer app. It's Shenmue: Epic Samurai Opera Edition. Sub the thing or at least offer japanese audio on your all powerful blu-ray and this game will kill. From the trailer alone with the Samurai Champloo soundtrack this game is a winner. However I suppose I'll have to wait till 2015 till you decide to pull your thumb out and translate it let alone market it.

  • The girl asked him to kill Musashi to avenge her parents but she later realized that he, Kiryu, is actually Musashi.

On vacation in the US still, long absence will continue for 2 more weeks or so, but

Hot damn, I wasn't interested in the first two Ryu ga gotoku games, but this looks awesome. Must get!

  • Are some of the in game characters modeled after real-life actors in Japan? Two of them definitely resemble their could-be real-life counterpart.

  • Love that 17th Century hip-hop.

  • I loved the 1st game the 2nd one looks awesome and this one looks even more awesome. This series is pure gold, SEGA should be backing this series as a top gun AAA series. After all these games are the best things to come out of SEGA in a long time.

  • Oh Snap! We get to see Majima's ancestors. Great stuff. Hopefully, Yakuza 2 will come out around the same time as this does in the U.S. I really love this series.

Oh and yeah, the pop music is a shameful disgrace. Reminds me of those Sonic trailers from last year and we all know what Sonic was like...Sega, stop sabotaging yourselves. Keep the music with the tone of the game, which is definitely not pop.

@2deadeyes: Yeah some of the characters are modelled after real people. I think I remember the article in famitsu that talked about it.

  • Why is it Yakuza 3 when the story is obviously about Miyamoto Musashi? It even has the battle with Sasaki Kojiro by the river...

Anyways, looks great! I read the book, but I think Vagabond manga is kinda an adaptation to it.

I also don't like the mix between that kind of music to japanese historical settings (like they did on Samurai Champloo)... I'd rather have some traditional japanese music.

    But whatever... game looks great.

  • Hey, that old guy looks like Pat Moritta! Is it just a coincidence that he's the wise teacher who shows the main character a thing or two about the fighting arts?

    @Bokusatsu_Tenshi:

There have been quite a few games that are called sequels but are not continuing the story further. Metal Gear 3 and Devil May Cry 3, for instance.

    @basically all of you:

This is the music of the trailer, not the music for the actual game. Take a deep breath and calm down. I liked Samurai Champloo's music, because it was intentional, not tacked on to gather more appeal. I loved Champloo's opeing and closing theme. One of the best I've heard in anime.

This game looks realy good. I hope that this sells well and part 2 comes to the U.S.
