Game Watch are reporting that Counter-Strike Online, Valve and Nexon's shot at total Asian gaming domination, just enjoyed a successful three-day closed beta. Around 170,000 Korean CS players took a shot at the upcoming, heavily localised, Steam-free version of the classic FPS, which among other tweaks features some new maps and new weapons. CSO is scheduled for release in Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan.

Steam free CS? Bestill my heart! Way to make a great game even better.
What they don't tell you is that this closed beta was based off of the Vietnam War.
omg ocelot is in the game?
As opposed to Counter Strike Offline?
That picture is badass.
Wait, why do we need another CS game again? Looks identical to cs on hl1
Oh never mind, localization. Right...
@shindokie: Now I'll show you why they call me "Revolver."
Oh shit man, that menu screen is tight. Anybody have the full size version?
i could have sworn Counter-Strike was always online to begin with.
shows how much i know...
There was a singleplayer version of cs, CS:Zero =p
@Dangeresque: Draw!
@Dangeresque:
are you seducing me because if so *roar*
I like steam.... =\
IT IS BE "SUPER COUNTER-STRAIKU PANAGO ONLINE MMORPG" IS MEGA GOOD FOR KOREA GAME VIDEO PLAYER MAN
Yeah. That's why it's called Counter-Strike Online. Choose from either Dustano, Cobalia, or Azteca as your home server, then play CS and win to earn CSilver, then spend it on an ultra-cute kawaii skirt for your Counter-Terrorist avatar which ups your EVA stat by 2 points. Or buy CSCash so you can get that ultra-stylish cash-only pink flowery M4-A1 skin with a delicious hint of orange. There's also the plastic surgery makeover section, where you can get big saucer eyes on your character. HEHE KOREA MUCH LIKE ^^
No, seriously. All you need to do in Korea to market a game is to throw in big anime eyes, a couple miniskirts, have it release in seasons, throw "Online" into the game's title, and YOU'RE SET.
@yamamoto114:
In America all you have to do is add boobs!
@Providence:
Or guns.
This makes me wonder how popular that Counter-Strike Neo arcade game is over in that region.
@Limey: hit the link, there's a bigger version there
@yamamoto114: Or men grabbing each other in a cage, but hey, it's not gay until you make eye contact.
How exactly is Nexon involved, are they publishing it?
@Plunkett: Yeah, found that-- I was just hoping there was a bigger, desktop sized version :P
Very smart move, Valve.
On Quake1 countrys like Brasil, Russia and Australia used to be strong. I guest the reason was that these countrys have either bad computers (old), or bad internet connections. Is like the 2th world of technology. The Half-Life1 engine is very old, so can run with the speed-of-light on old computers of these countrys... A full list can be:
USA (*1 not because is 2th world, but because theres shitloads of people there), UK (see *1), Brazil, Russia, Australia, Philippines, China (but need localization) etc..
For Brazil or Russia maybe theres already a localized CS. So no need. It whas China that left to be dominated by Valve :D
@Snake726: Yup, Nexon are publishing and localizing it.
NO fair a "semi" new counterstrike? First off I have to say that I love team fortress on the Orange Box. My Nights are split between COD4 and Team Fortress on my 360. Having said that, I would have feinted with happiness if valve had also released counterstrike source with it. It just seems like a no brainer.
Valve is very smart, periodically run stats to detect how much ram, cpu, gpu the users have. These guys have like a real-time profile of the users hardware. So can optimize and betatest against that hardware.
it has cs 1.6 at best gfx why go back when css is way better?
@LostHorizon: If it ain't broke don't fix it.
It looks like a bizarre mix of 1.6, CZ, and Source. O_o Some 1.6 maps, new CZ looking maps, player models look like CZ quality and the weapon models look like they're caught somewhere between CZ and Source lol x_X
So what the f*** is counter strike online? Is it coming to europe? Or is it some hardcore version of 1.6 for korean players only or something?
@TaMs: The latter. It doesn't run through Steam, since it's published by Nexon, and it's heavily localized for the Asian market.
They'll probably play it for 15 minutes and go back to playing Starcraft or some shitty MMO.
"Steam-free version"
Can I get a 'hell yeah!'?
Or, at the very least, a 'thank god!'?
Oh, wait, I misunderstood. Looks like I'll still be suffering through Steam...
Asia Only: Move along.. nothing to see here.
I dont see a reason to play CS anymore now that we have COD4. ;D
Its funny that they are releasing it in Japan too. Since the last I recall Japan didnt exactly have the largest demograph for CS players. Granted though it was usually the only FPS I saw them playing at net cafes though.
Though there is a small hardcore group of UT players. Theres some pro player whos a little Japanese kid. Must be in his last teens by now though.
I want this added stuff on the international CS:S...
That's a fucking awesome piece of art up top.
The Koreans used to love CS. Where did all the love go? Did the cybercafes not want to pay for the license?
Still it looks like it's CTs vs Ts like old school Counter-Strike. Not the shitty futuristic bullshit Counter-Strike Neo, created for the Japanese because they can't handle war.
Wait, does CS Online include the Korean's favourite gameplay feature, Real Money Trade? Because if it does, then it'll be an absolute crock of shit.
sweet...but no USA release in site?...yet?...I can't wait.
@yamamoto114: I cannot help but imagine saying that in an uber-CJK accent. Super happy fun fun!
i Wana play
I think, but don't know for sure, that the artist who did that pic up top was Adi Granov.
What is that?
They already announced "Kane & Lynch 2: Army Men"?!?
tnx
