The newest member of the Bemani family—which includes DDR, Guitar Freaks, Pop 'n' Music, et al.—in Japanese arcades is jubeat, a touch-panel game that... well, we're not sure what the hell is going on with this one yet. It's currently on location test in Japan, so we're sure to see how the game behaves in motion soon enough, but it appears that players will have to frantically slap display screens in time to J-pop tunes, competing with others via local or internet connection. That mysterious glowing cube on top of the cabinet? Unsure, but it may simply be for decoration and to increase the obnoxiousness of the seizure inducing lightshow. More on jubeat as we learn about it.

Anti-Semitism!!...
Or not.
Anyway, I'm interested, if it gets us away from the humdrum of yearly DDR, IIDX, GF/dm, pop'n.
Konami adds "HateCrime" to Bemani Line-Up.
Um.. do you pronouce this jew-beat?
Terrible name, but Borat might enjoy it...
@Kenzya:
Yes... thats what it sounds like.
This looks like it isn't gonna be to good. Kind of reminds me of Dance Mania/Freaks. If you don't know what that was, in a nutshell, it sucked too.
I thought it was "jub-eat" which sounds almost like "jubblies" which is a favorite subject of Kotaku.
Oh Japan. Is THIS how you got into WWII?
@Kenzya:
I was about to ask that!
How did they come up with such an easily ridiculed name?
It worked for Wii
@BPMOmega: That does make sense if you look at the E in the logo.
Since it involves J-pop...how about J-beat? or Jabeat? Jubeat sounds a bit silly to say in public, don't you think?
@Erwin211:
I see what you did there!
Perhaps the beat in "jew-beat" is not a verb, but a noun. In that case, J-pop may take on a different meaning. Hava Nagila, anyone?
Jew beat... Is this going to be like DDR except with Rabbis getting their funk on in the background?
Someone at bemanistyle says it's pronounce you-beat, not jew-beat.
Also, the controller is made to look like a drum machine (which makes everything make a bit more sense.) Could be interesting, I just don't understand how you're supposed to know the timing of when to hit/touch the panels.
@Mr Bentley:
I head he is suspending Borat and Ali G because of some civil issue and people not willing to take a joke. Society having to much shit up there ass to take any kind of humor ugh. Anyway u beat? Is it like ubisoft? yu bi soft yu beat? hmm
Stupid name, cool looking game.
It looks to me more like a sampler than a drum machine: [www.sweetwater.com]
Makes more sense too.
I guess I'll just have to pray that Konami gives this game a chance across the Pacific...
it looks spiffy. i doubt it'll be that interesting though. i just dig the aesthetics
@shindokie:
Yet Mencia and every black comedian is all gravy!
I think there is just tolerance levels with bigotry built in.
This game is really hard on hard mode...

@Djriceken
So...I guess to pass Expert Mode we'll all have to learn Morse Code?
@FatCatLim:
or Braille

That is a walk-through spoiler link to song 3!
@Kenzya: You beat me to it!
That looks a lot like an MPC.
This made me think of that Matisyahu dude for some reason...if it was a rapping game that used old yiddish folk tunes for samples that would be really interesting.
@EnigmaNemesis: ?
I'm confused.
i haven't seen the gameplay yet but if the buttons are indeed the screen i have no idea how konami will ever release a cs version.
Wow, that's nearly as bad as the iBeat Blaxx MP3 player.
Dang, everyone beat me to the racist jokes.
@crosswayboy: You are correct, that is what I meant to say ;>_>
funny.
when i first read the title, i though: "Jug-beats? i want some jugs right now too"
D:
I must find the test machine and play it!
SHIT! Noticed the dates and the test has ended already. D:
The official blog says the name is pronounced like "you-beat." Still won't stop everyone from reading it as "jew-beat" though. :p
Is this a case of "Guys, we need a bemani game we can put on DS." ??
I wonder if there would be an 'osu!'/EBA game ported to arcade.
I used to love DDR but bemani is not something for me, the j-pop/techno beat button smashing stuff cannot compare the guitar hero/rock band music spirit.
It's about time there's a new Bemani game. The most recent one was what, Karaoke Revolution, and that wasn't even developed by Konami (except in Japan)
Wow I can totally see some skinheads taking the name the wrong way.
The game is actually a play on words (as are many things in the Bemani series, like .59...) The pronunciation is ユビート "yubiito", with a long "i". It's a combination of 指 "yubi", which means "finger", and ビート "biito", which is "beat". So it sort of means "finger-beat".
