Selling 330,000 copies of Mario Party DS a week in Japan is impressive, to say the least, but when the nation is snapping up nearly as many Nintendo DS handhelds in the same time frame, it goes a long to explaining the resurgence. Final Fantasy IV's portable availability probably didn't hurt. Nintendo once again dominates (Ed's note: look up synonym for dominate) the Media Create sales charts this week, selling hardware at nearly twice the rate of its competitors combined. Someone over there likes their mini-games!
- Nintendo DS Lite - 279,551
- Wii - 232,907
- PSP - 171,804
- PlayStation 3 - 58,167
- PlayStation 2 - 20,391
- Xbox 360 - 7,908

synonym for "dominate" = pwn
Can we get a "holy fuck!" over here.
Apparently PSP won't share with it's younger brother a piece of the pie.
It's interesting comparing last week's sales to this week.
* Nintendo DS Lite - 222,132
* PSP - 184,610
* Wii - 170,558
* PlayStation 3 - 63,720
* PlayStation 2 - 18,025
* Xbox 360 - 8,561
Everything sold less except for Wii, DS and PS2 which sold more.
it indeed does print money.
@dunetiger: That's about right.
I don't care what you guys and the numbers say. Everyone in Japan must have like 3 DSes.
Alternatives;
Preponderate
Superabound
Tyrannize
Outfunked
Seems like a typical week. Not a bad thing! Guess we'll have to wait for the next big release for Sony/Microsoft to pull in more numbers though.
Otherwise, good show.
Hmm wow, Well, nothing unexpected. Nintendo is the king of the consoles and the handhelds at the moment, and I pray they don't mess it up. I'm really enjoying what they've been doing so far...
Now back to playing Eternal Sonata...
Haha.
I got Mario and Metroid Prime 3 on christmas, but I also got lots of 360 games (And I was able to use my 360 since It had to be hidden till Christmas) so I haven't actually played any Wii games except for GH3 when I'm not playing Rock band, Eternal Sonata, CoD4... hmm, I don't wanna fall behind on Mario and never end up playing it like what happened to Sunshine...
Bah.
Anyway, good job again to Nintendo for doing so well.
I could use the little sliver of pie that represents the 360 to shank that fool that owes me money>:(
@Roflcopter_Down: Nah, the undead need to play too.
@Kenofthedead: Im going to have to go with out funked, simply because its awesome.
@SaintAnima:
It's not a "typical week". It's the week before Christmas. A lot of gifts being bought.
The buying pattern through Christmas has been a bit different than the buying pattern before the Christmas season. Seems like all the Nintendo consoles got big bumps, and basically nobody else did. No idea why, really, and it has kind of surprised me... though it does mean Nintendo's got the furthest to settle back once the holiday season's over.
This generation is so totally fucked sideways that why even try to figure it out?
Nice numbers for PSP, even though it can't sell games.
PSP is still doing great, that is good news!
@badasscat: though it does mean Nintendo's got the furthest to settle back once the holiday season's over.
Oh man that's funny.
@badasscat: Ah. Well sure, but by "Typical Week" I meant that Nintendo is leading like always, with PSP and the PS3 keeping solid numbers, and the PS2 and 360 covering the back. Now that you mention it, it is weird no one else sold better.
The writer of the blog failed to mention Japanese don't celebrate Christmas, so of course it will be typical week.
@Kokuryukai:
I thought they did, being that I've been ceaselessly amused by the fact that KFC is the official Christmas food.
Can we get Bashcraft or someone to post a Japan primer or something? Between this and the XBox sales chart is just assumption city. They actually DO celebrate Xmas in Japan. It might night be the westernized capitalism orgy like we have, but it has cards and candy and presents and everything.
Yeah SONY!!!
If the PS3, PS2, and Xbox360 pieces were all the same color it would almost look like a peace sign.
So why is the PS3 falling? Does anyone know?
Are we going to start seeing more 5 to 1 ratio weeks?
Is the PS3 surge from the price drop over or were there actually some Wii supply issues in Japan that have now been sorted? I honestly don't get it. I thought the PS3 was moving up, not down.
@dunetiger: Isn't the official Christmas food strawberry cake?
Japanese insight on the matter, courtesy of 2ch:
[namidame.2ch.net]
@dunetiger: pwn is no longer enough for the wii and the ds, mega-pwn fits better :D...
@subnet6: Considering the still highest price point, the lack of JRPGs and overall games in comparison (I own a PS3 by the way *shield*), I think these numbers are still quite impressive, even for Japan.
Also, I'm willing to bet a dollar that PS3's sales will be a bit higher next week again. Ok, two dollars. No more. :P
@TOCATL: indeed.
and even "mega-pwn" seems inadequate, its like Nintendo is simply going to give everyone else a French passport and tell them to pack their bags and go back to their new home.
:P
@subnet6: The PS3 isn't really moving up or down long term, it just has fluctuations. When there are no big releases or major price cuts, it falls further behind (as in this week, it was outsold over 4:1 in one of the busiest weeks of the year). In the past weeks when it had a new SKU announced, a major price cut, a new color, several games.. it closed the gap significantly and even outsold it for a while.
But generally, ratios stay about the same. So far, the Wii has outsold the PS3 about 3:1 lifetime in Japan. If you look at Japanese sales history (which you can, thanks to Media Create) and look at GC/PS2 and N64/PS1, these ratios can fluctuate to week to week based on circumstances but stay basically the same for the life of the consoles.
In other words, if history is any guide (and it should be), we should see sales of around 3:1 in the Wii's favor for the forseeable future. On average. Last month it tilted more towards the PS3, this month its tilting heavily in favor of the Wii. Overall, about 3:1.
@Roflcopter_Down: At this point I assume that Nintendo has opened cyborg conversion centers in Japan. The cyborgs then need to purchase DSes for parts to augment themselves.
Here are the respective approximate market shares for the three companies for this week:
Nintendo: 66.5%
Sony: 32.5%
Microsoft 1.0%
Especially since Nintendo is making money off of each machine sold, this is impressive. Poor Microsoft though...
So all these Christmas celebrations I just had here in Osaka were delusions and no one takes a part in it?
Wow, I had really good saki then if I did all that. Hell, even the hangover must still be great as I keep seeing adverts, cards, and deserts all about Big Red Man day.
Remember folks, you don't have to be in the religion to celebrate Christmas. You can just be a consumer whore!
@Kokuryukai:
Of course Japanese celebrate Christmas, no where near in the religious way westerners do, but every way as the commercial holiday it has become.
I got 2 Christmas cards from my Japanese friends living over there ^^, just watch jdramas and see how Christmasy their episodes are around this time of the year.
@Kenofthedead: Go down a few topics -- according to the minions, folks over there hate all American products as well.
@Sollus: What do you mean, 'figure out'? there's nothing to figure out: The Wii and DS are dominant, and everything else is lining up behind them.
I kind of wonder what last generations sales charts looked like, I bet it was like this but the PS2 in the Wii's place, Gamecube in the PS3's place and XBOX... well... no comment.
@Shaoko:
Last gen sales comparison's are examined in quite a bit of depth over at neogaf. Just don't expect to get a posting account over there any time soon.
@littleball,
Thanks, that makes sense.
It just seemed like, if everything else is way up due to some holiday (or whatever they consider christmas to be in Japan) and the PS3 is actually lower, then that translates into a big drop. But I think you're probably right about the ratios over time becoming consistent.
Ha, I thought it was a big jump when the Wii went from 20K to around 50K. This is just ridiculous.
@badasscat:
You should get a job in PR.
@badasscat: I want some of the drugs your on.
PSP and PS3 are both holding their own pretty well. Wonder why the Japanese are so turned off by the 360?
Man, you just can't sell an xbox to these guys. Candy coated money rainbow lollipops with every console purchased?
what's total ds sold in this handheld game nation?
@AltDelete:
they dont like lollipop, if you sell it with some loli pillow thingy with xbox360, it might sell a little better.
@Sixtail: Me too!
:)
MY SCOUTER! CRACKED! SUCH.... POWER LEVEL!
THE DS WILL KILL US ALL, FLEE! WE MUST GATHER THE DRAGONBALLS!
Damn! That giant Nintendo Pac-Man is closing its mouth on Sony and Microsoft!!
Anyone know the total DS sales worldwide? I wonder how close it is to Sony's 120M for the PS2.
