Stop playing video games immediately - you are hurting your brain! A doctor Chou Yuan-hua from the Department of Psychiatry of Taipei Veterans General Hospital conducted a study on 30 25 year-olds, monitoring their brains for blood flow during a 30 minute gaming session. He discovered that the act of playing video games "obviously causes a decreased blood flow in the brain" with increasing severity when the games in question are violent.
Noting that the study focused on subjects who played video games for only 30 minutes, Chou said many youngsters spend far more time on video games each day, unaware that doing so on a long term basis could damage the frontal lobe of the brain, as well as the anterior cingulate gyrus.
Not my anterior cingulate gyrus! Fuckbeans. I love my cingulate gyrus.
The frontal lobe of the brain is associated with thinking, speaking, and impulse control, so the study definitely explains 75% of Xbox Live users. Meanwhile my beloved cingulate gyrus monitors the internal emotional response, which is why I am so cold and dead inside. Decreased blood flow to these areas is generally exhibited in patients suffering from schizophrenia and depression.
All I can say is thank goodness I am no longer 25 years old and thus not affected by these findings.

JT in disguise?
I imagine if this study showed that video games had created a positive increase of blood flow to the brain that it would have been praised instead of mocked.
Thank god I only play for about 20 minutes a day. Have fun with your brain loss guys! lol
Never judge a study by its statistics. Always ask who's funding it, what result they were LOOKING for, and how they went about FINDING that desired result.
NOES I LOSTAREED THE ABILATEY TO SPEEEEEEEEK!111111111111111111111
Brain damage here I come. Well, came. It's already too late for me.
Dr. Kawashima is a liar. :(
What game were they playing?
Dammit. I hate being 25.
Oh well, didn't the Brain Age doctor make the argument that blood flow increases during his game?
And didn't Macleans make the argument that blood flow to the brain increases while standing on your head?
Solution: 25 year olds, please stand on your head while playing video games. Unless it's Brain Age.
i think i feel sad =]
Let me guess, this was a study where the participants were playing Rock Band,but instead of having drumsticks they had to use their heads on the drum pads.
I'll be taking all my brain damage now thanks.
OMG, I exhibit the cold dead emotions. I am yet another statistic of video games have terrible effects on people.
First Doom and other shooters make me violent. Now this. I am in terrible trouble now!
Since we are society driven by pill meds, I am sure we will find a pill that will fix this. Side affect may cause dizziness, bleeding, or mood swings.
A more likely explanation is that his wife is better than him at Tetris.
That would explain the drooling and uncontrollable urination. Oh, and the standing on a street corner, yelling at traffic.
Who cares? Assassin's Creed is worth a little drain bramage.
Well at least it wasn't the Interior cingulate gyrus. Then I'd be worried.
it should be noted that there is no actual factual link between decreased blood flow to the frontal lobe and the effects "Dr" Chou Yuan-hua claims gaming causes - it's his strong belief that these results will occur, but it isn't fact.
Am I open to the possibility that games can have a negative effect on the brain? Sure. Is this guy the one to tell us about it? Not likely.
Where's the control? What sort of effect does watching tv, or reading a book have on blood flow to the frontal lobe?
There might be something to this. I played a lot of Call of Duty 4 on xbox live over the holiday break and honestly just about every single random room I jumped into had at least one player in there with some sort of brain damage!
lol
This explains a lot. Just the other day I forgot how to use scissors. And last week, I had an hour-long conversation with an hallucination. Video games damaged my brain! Now, who the hell do I sue?
I miss JTT. Home Improvement come back to me.
@What The Geek: Nailed it. Without a control study, its useless.
what? nothing ever happened to me! I play video games all the time and -UNGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRFFFFF
So is my gaming giving me more brain damage than my binge drinking?
'specially if you hold it in your lungs longer. wait! *cough* *cough* what are we talking about again?
"Although no conclusions have yet been drawn regarding what might happen if blood flow to these brain areas is diminished frequently"
Hope the conclusions will be positive. I'd probably continue gaming anyway, though. Little left to lose of my poor brain
@rickster773:
HE'S STROKING OUT! GET A CRASH CART!
Next in the lineup of Nintendo: "Brain Damage: Destroy your brain in minutes a day!"
No, thanks, I'll keep my videogames and the damage to my brain. Because actually living without them would really damage it.
@metadae: The tests are a lie.
and playing Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball will increase bloodflow to ALL PARTS of your body including your brain and you will be that better off playing it!
now pay me my money Tecmo
well shit i just played about 2 hours of rockband and how my getting ready to sit my ass down and rest my legs with a couple hours of mass effect...im screwed and im 25!
@cringer8:
Ah ha ha.... ha.... that's a joke, right?
...right? o.o
I find it baffling that a scientist would actually post such findings. Any scientist in the world will tell you that a small sample of 30 people is no where near enough for determining the conclusions this guy has made. He needs to check his findings...or just do us all a favor and become a shoe salesman, so we can kick him every time we buy shoes.
Oh my god, just think what board games are doing to your mind! And we thought that we were just getting bored of Monopoly, in reality or frontal lobes were so damaged it caused fatigue, anger issues, and Serotonin depletion! .... on the other hand, would gaming be a viable option for a cheap lobotomy?
@rainofwalrus:
hahahah! and I was just about to comment that drugs aren't good for brains either but it doesn't mean drug users will stop hahah!
Can we get a recording of the survey's results as read by the computer voice from Portal? I think that might actually scare me away from playing videogames for a while.
Less brain - easier to amuse!, perfect!, I think I'll replay Armored Core 4 in a year.
i'm an american living in taiwan right now, and i actually saw the news story on this a few days ago. they did show a certain video game which i'm certain contributes to the results...
Dynasty Warriors 5.

repeat
i'm guilty of being a fan of the series, but luckily i'm only 23
"Decreased blood flow to these areas is generally exhibited in patients suffering from schizophrenia and depression."
Makes sense. Schizophrenia because they are playing as a character, not themselves. Depression because they were getting owned at whatever game they were playing.
@What The Geek:
Agreed. And I doubt your own body would decrease the blood flow to that part of the brain to the point that damage would actually occur, even on a long term basis. That's my non-expert view, so don't bite me....
This explains CHinese Gamers in general.
@tehFluffzComeback:
You, sir, have just been nominated for "A Week in Comments."
Phew... Thank god I'm only 20...
Ayiee! Cell phones cause cancer and brain tumors! Wi-fi cause schizophrenia! Video games make you retarded! Dinosaurs have been resurrected via amber mosquitoes and are coming to eat us all! RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!!!!!!!
who really cares about brain damage,just about everything modern humans do today cause some sort of brain damage or social disorder; so i say party it up cause who really wants to be sane in their eighties and so on.
Only 22 years of brain dammage is not that bad right?
There may have been a time that I would mind that the blood flow to my brain was being lessened, only I've been playing for the better part of 15+ years, so I'm sure that part of my brain died a long time ago while racing micro machines around cherios on a breakfast table.
Seriously, tell these "researchers" (who obviously don't play video games in the first place) to keep their over-paid hands off of our controllers and away from our entertainment venue. :)
Paging JT, Paging JT, this just in, the noodle are in and the pots a boiling. Boiling I tells yah!
I can see him now, protesting in congress saying that video games turn us into flesh eating zombies.
Hmm.. that sounds like a video game plot right there...
i saw the news story in taipei and it was accompanied by one game. surprise surprise, dynasty warriors 5
well coming from a med student, it might not mean much but...
blood flow diminishes from multiple areas of the brain when you are not using them, this does not equate to brain damage, instead it is a way for the brain to cope with the demands of brain areas that are active. Active areas preferentially get increased blood flow at the expense of areas that are not being used a lot. Because the brain is incompressible yada yada yada
take every study with a grain of salt
I'll wait until a doctor from a real country does a similar study.
Brain: damaged, but my thumbs shall live forever like the power-hungry, trained beasts that they are.
The Brain is dead! Long live the Thumb!
