Last week's Mario Party DS sales were no fluke. While the 180,000 copies it sold for the week ending December 16 were it's previous best, in the week ending December 23 it set a new record. 330,000. For a rubbish DS game released in early November, those are good, good numbers. Wii Fit continues to sell well, moving another 214,000 units on the way past three quarters of a million sold, while Final Fantasy IV on DS (sadly) reinforced Square's rehash policy by selling 288,000 copies. As for Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, which last week debuted at #3, well...it's a little lower this week.
1) Mario Party DS (DS)- 330,000 / 1,156,000
2) Final Fantasy IV (DS) - 288,000 / NEW
3) Wii Fit (Wii) - 214,000 / 749,000

21) New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
22) Kirarin Revolution: Make and Show at the Kime-Kira Stage (DS)
23) World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (PS2)
24) Higurashi Matsuri (PS2)
25) Animal Crossing Wild World (DS)
26) Dinosaur King: The Seven Fragments (DS)
27) WarioWare Smooth Moves (Wii)
28) Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3)
29) Mega Man Star Force 2: Berserk × Dinosaur (DS)
30) Mega Man Star Force 2: Berserk × Shinobi (DS)
The 30 top holiday games and there's only one for the PS3, and none for the 360. Not hard to tell which way Japan's bread is buttered.

Japan sure loves the DS!!!
Rubbish? C'mon, you know you love some Mario Party.
Wow... GT5P dropped like a brick... Ouch.
On the plus side of things, Mario Galaxy has gone up to over 100k for the week.
I'm surprised Mario & Sonic is still up there... I still doubt Sega will get the 4 million they're hoping for, though.
Is this Nintendo's chart?
I'm convinced Japan is brainwashing their youth somehow with the DS to create some sort of "super army" When we get attacked by giant robots from Japan, they will be controlled by 100s of thousands of unsuspecting little children from Japan on their DS's. haha
Go Mario (Galaxy) go.
Looking at those Wii Fit sales make me laugh. I'm sure it has played a part in the sales of other Wii titles.
Wii Fit is selling really consistently. It's been within the same unit sold range since it's release.
It is also very good to see Galaxy still charting and creeping towards a million.
The drop off of GT5:P disturbs me just a tad.
@Rabidsquirrel: Wait! wasn't that also DLable from the PSN store? Wonder how many were DL'ed?
@Rabidsquirrel: Either its a bad game (havent seen reviews yet) or they just aren't digging it which is strange since I thought that was one of their favorite franchises.
@Rabidsquirrel: I thought that too at first. I believe that was Gran Turismo 4: Prologue or at least thats the only one I can find on Metacritic.
WOW wii fit is outselling super mario galaxy.
I had no idea so many people in the world had god awful taste and the inability to make basic decisions... god help us all it seems us superior people that can make correct choices are forced to suffer the burden of those people forcing us to take care of them and handle all the things in their life they are too timid to handle.
@Jcnet: Suck on it, weenie!
poor poor 360
CoD4 released for Japan today. I guess 60k for the week.
@NitrousO: I`d say its just a game for the real fans of the series. The rest are probably waiting for the "full" game.
@Jcnet:
I can't tell if you're joking or not, but either way, you fail.
Fail how? Last time I checked being right was not synonymous with failure.
There is no excuse other than bad taste / poor decision making skills for wii fit outselling an ACTUAL video game. Quite frankly it makes me lose faith in my planets humanity.
Holy shit that's a lot of Nintendo in the charts. Even in the days of competing with the Megadrive and PC Engine I don't think Nintendo had this much chart dominance.
My heart jumped a little when I saw Dragon Quest IV with so few sales. The key part is IV, not IX. Speaking of which, how in the world does another Squeenix remake sell better than one of the most innovative games of the year, Galaxy?
Nintendo continues to own the charts and print money.
@caseypenk: Actually this particular FF4 Remake happend to come out last week (20th) and also happens to be one of the better FF games in the franchise where Galaxy has been out since November - granted i really like how Galaxy have been developing legs like New Super Mario Bros
With the amount of DS that are roaming the country. Somehow I wasn't really amazed by this week's chart. Seems like everyone in japan got a Mario Party DS game for christmas.
@zgnoud: I think you mean DQ, but nevertheless, I do give credit to Squeenix for remaking it in 3D... I want such a highly-praised and original game to reap the labor put into it.
@caseypenk: Whoops, the last part is about Mario Galaxy. It's really too late to be doing this.
hm, i already wonder for quite a while about japanese game development falling behind US/european studios (besides a few exceptions like Capcom most haven´t done that great on the now current gen systems up to now), now i also wonder more and more about what the japanese audience now prefers for a while.
Really seems they become more and more ultra casual or just generally going even more away from the sales figures in US and europe than before, i mean come on, mario party on ds is the best selling game,wtf?!?
Ha! I remember when everyone freaked out that SMG wasn't in the top ten the week of the release of... what games were they?
I swear I'm moving to Japan and making a DS title.
@Darthearl: Next week should be interesting since COD4 came out today.
Last week I dont recall anything new came out for the 360.
The number of older games in that list is pretty amazing. Animal Crossing is over 2 years old and it's still selling a lot.
Pre-Christmas chart. I guess a lot of non-gamers buying mass market games that they've heard of as gifts.
Next week will probably be similar. Things will get back to "normal" around the second week in January, by which I mean I expect to see one or two non-Nintendo games in the top ten.
Other than Naruto, that is.
@t0yrobo: Havn't Animal Crossing been on Japans list for like forever? I remember I thought it was funny how it was still up in the top 10, but that was like a year ago. It dropped a few spots, but being 25 after 2 years is still astounding. It must have sold an extreme amount of games.
I'm inventing a foot sink as a permanent fixture for houses. This is my invention. Don't steal it. Don't put your dirty grubs on my Wii fit.
Nintendo success makes me angry.
@caseypenk:
Because Japanese gamers are retards. They enjoy generic, cliche stories delivered to them in the form of rediculously monotonous games over and over again. Remember VII? Start fight with Emerald Weapon, put down controller for 30 minutes while you do something that's actually fun, come back, and you win! In fact, if you make a game that sells poorly in Japan, then you know that you have made an innovative and enjoyable game. Or you just made a shitty game. That is also a possibility, and in fact, is more likely than the previous scenario. But the fact that some good Japanese developers (Suda, Kojima) have started bashing their own country's games and praising western design philosophy really makes me happy.
BTW, I actually like FF more than Dragon Quest. I've never finished a Dragon quest game, and I actually find them more boring than FF games. I do, however, cut them a little slack due to Toriyama being the head artist.
Right, because the rest of the world buying the same sports games, repeated FPS, clones of others, and movie cash ins (how well did Spider-Man 3 sell again?) shows how much better those outside Japan are.
Got to love stereotypes and insults, it makes any argument that much weaker for it.
Anyroad, hopefully Prof. Layton and Pandora's Box stays up there for quite a while. Such a fun game, and hopefully one that spurs many more like it.
@Kenofthedead: Yeah the new Prof Layton is excellent. Love the music and the art direction as much as the first one. Cept the 2nd is just so much better! Great stuff. Too bad its been snatched away from me by a friend but thats ok, way too many other games to play now anyways. ;D
@altgod: American/European games doesn't have cliché stories and generic gameplay? Can't really think of anything innovative coming out around here, so I don't know what you're talking about... All I see is "generic FPS", "generic RTS", " 2008", "guitar game that is identical to old japanese guitar freaks", "boring RPG in generic fantasy world"... I think the whole game industry has gone a bit stale lately, defintely not just Japan.
@Yin: Whoops, I but sportsgame inside of those arrow-thingies before 2008, but seems it got removed. Confusing.
@caseypenk: actually nah case i did mean Final Fantasy 4DS haha, it really was a timeless classic (2D sprite) this one was a full 3D remake with voice acting. but yeah
@Yin:
Many American/European games do have very generic stories, but at least the stories aren't their main selling points. I refuse to believe that FF's gameplay is what has made it so popular. At times, there is no gameplay at all! Halo's story may suck just as much balls as any JRPG's, but that's not the point. The gameplay is. And it may not be the most original or well excecuted, but at least I can stay awake while I play it, and on occassion, have a little fun.
@altgod:
Sorry. Suck as MANY balls. Balls can be individually counted. Odd time to be a grammer nazi...
@altgod: I see your point. But Japan makes good gameplay-clones too. Fighting games and third person-action like Devil May Cry.
And I got more fun out of FFIX than any FPS released since FEAR(haven't played Halo 3 though). I don't know why, I thought it had a good story and good gameplay. FFX was embarassing, and since then I haven't played any FF, so I don't know if they suck now.
I just think all countries make equally boring games right now :/
@Yin: Actually FFX was ok. FFX-2 was an embarassment.
Atleast good casual games are selling in Japan, usually in America bad movie cash ins or lame sequels are top sellers.
maybe some Japanese dev needs to complain some more about them falling behind as game publishers, wonder why that is...
@BassForever: Yeah thankfully Japan doesnt usually make bad movie cash-in games. Just bad anime cash-in games lol.
You completely missed Nintendo's vision of making 'video games' more accessible to the mainstream JCNET if you wholeheartedly believe what you say. Nintendo WANT Wii Fit to sell more copies than Galaxy; they don't want to confine the video game medium to how it has been defined over the past thirty odd years. To them and the mainstream it's the follow up to Wii Sports - so I'm sure they're more than pleased with the chart turnout.
@setuzoku: no it's the DS chart, the DS is it's own entity now in Japan
ps2 has the last bit of its life sucked out by some poor games, ps3 is barely alive and xbox360 is dead for the week.
wii shows how nintendo is the tomb for 3rd party games while ds actually shows, errr, how low the average IQ of human being is?
