Wii Wins the Amazon Christmas

wiiplay.jpg

Amazon is just giddy with excitement. The holidays are over and they are bursting at the seams with money spent on presents. Their annual "We made a shitton of money during the holidays" press release went out this morning and in it the the Wii as their top selling console and Call of Duty 4 as their top game.

While they don't release any specific numbers for their video game sales, they do say that Amazon sold Wii system "at approximately 17 per second when they were in stock."

Here's the top ten current lists of video game and hardware sales on Amazon:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360
Super Mario Galaxy
Wii Nunchuk control
Wii Play with Remote
Wii Remote
Wii Charging Station
Wii
Assassin's Creed for the Xbox 360
Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training
Playstation 3 Wireless Sixaxis Controller

The PSP 2K, in the number 12 spot, was the next best-selling platform after the Wii

  • Wii is the winner. Though Call of Duty 4 is that high because it was on sale. :D

  • That means PSP just beat DS this holiday season, at least on Amazon, Sony can't feel to bad about this Christmas now.

    -WPack911

  • @WPack911: Whoa, I just noticed that too. I actually didn't see a DS at all even on Page 2.

  • PSP2k at 11, and PS3 (80 gig motorstorm) at 14.

Though I think these stats might be a mess because if they list all the different iterations of the 360 and PS3 separately it'll be hard to immediately gleam overall rankings.

  • That's good to hear. I want more third party support for the Wii.

  • 17 per second. I don't think I can say anything to demonstrate how impressed I am, but for me my Wii is just furniture. Haven't used the little white guy in a month maybe, I just use a Wiimote as iTunes remote control on my PC...

  • woot way to go Sony. Slowly picking up steam. next years amazon will be more interesting to me, this was kinda obvious . Wii = Buy it for the holidays or you don't love your kids.

As much as I like the Wii, it's starting to scare me how damn popular it is...when OAP's are discussing Wii Sports at the bus stop...I feel an inexplicable shiver running down my spine.

  • Wii won hardware. 360 won software. Next year I predict something similar.

I for one am glad the PSP-2k is doing so darn well. I haven't taken the plunge on one yet, but its becoming a better and better proposition from all angles, and people are obviously recognizing that. I want a strong competitor in that space from somebody besides Nintendo, I love my DS but it needs something to measure up against, pressure Ninty a bit to give us perhaps a more powerful DS/GBA successor next time around. I don't think late 09 is too early to be thinking of such a device, and I hope the PSP-3000/etc is cheaper, faster, etc still by then.

Somebody sell me on a good, playable portable basketball game for PSP...please. That would justify it right there.

@Flanker: So, no Wii Browser, No VC, no nothing for a month? That is a little depressing, just in general to have a console lying around like that. Its like the poor little silver gamecube on my shelf, which I'll never sell because of its awesome GBA player attachment, but most of the time I'm just playing GBA games so they go in the DS. Once in awhile I'll hanker for some old school GB Pipe Dream/Tetris or to play FFVI on my 46 inch DLP, scaling blur be damned, so there lies the GC, just waiting.

  • Nice too see Sony doing a lot better now, as for Microsoft seems like the 360 hardware sales are slowing down - no surprise there - there are no games to look forward to next year - well besides Ninja Gaiden 2

  • Image of DaiMacculate DaiMacculate at 04:39 PM on 12/26/07 *

@Krondonian: I know, right? I mean, I like my Wii, accepting its flaws and loving it even during the times it lies dormant in favor of games on my PC and 360 it can't play...its like my favorite puppy that just happens to be the runt, but can do some really sweet tricks on occasion and is reliable as hell. Still, its mainstream popularity is a bit unsettling...I love the hate though, I drink it up because I swear I think the Wii's success may be some type of cosmic/Force correction for all the extreme anti-[insert game/platform person doesn't have and dislikes here] hate that goes around, online and off. I just figure, play the thing, enjoy what it has to offer (consolidate classic games, the first party nintendo stuff, the 1 in 8 3rd party game that doesn't suck) and don't hate, because you never know when the system/platform you've chosen we'll take a turn for the worse and then it'll be payback time.

  • @Flanker:
explain how to do this! Link?

  • I hope that The PS3 drops in price again now that the holidays are over. I'm starting to save up for one

  • @WPack911: To be accurate, the PSP2K beat out each individual DS models. (Black, pink and a gold bundle with Phantom Hourglass are on page 3 and the classic white is on 4.)

What those 4 models summed up to you can't tell though.

  • I just bought my Wii for the VC content, since I just own 2 or 3 titles for the Wii itself. Does that makes the Wii a bad console itself??? Judging by the fact I'm 1 page away from filling all my Wii screens, I'll say... no, not really.

I'm happy the Wii is doing so well, in all due hoenstly. I don't like how both Microsoft and Sony do buissness, and the fact that the "fun" console is winning, really shows how both "buissness models" are flawed. They "work" of course, but not as well as the Big N's model.

Of course, the "real" test comes up this '08. If the Wii keeps its success the next year... well, there's no other way around it: The Big N is back, :)

    El Cernex

  • The DS is losing to the PSP because it's completely sold out.

  • 360 must have sold some hardware since xbox live has been jank for me all day. Bunch of N00bs getting online I guess. All I know to scare me about a Wii is that my 58 year old mom wants one now. I think it's a great thing for nintendo, just keep your darn "waggle" games away from the 360 or PS3. Oh and wtf is up with that best buy ad, I went there to buy assasin's creed and the simpsons game on the 360 but they are only ps3. That was a deciptive ad but I may have been hungover. Rant over.

  • @sirsri: If I'm not missing anything...
    15. PS3 80GB Motorstorm pack
    32. PS3 40GB Spiderman movie pack
    35. XBOX360 Elite
    61. XBOX360 Pro

What I don't understand is why people buy the XBOX360 wireless network adapter (it's at no.18)? It's $89.99! Doesn't it work with other usb wifi adapter? the overall cost of buying XBOX360 with the XBOX360 wifi adapter would make the XBOX360 a bit more pricey compared to PS3... (I'm assuming that no XBOX360 have built-in wifi.. I could be wrong though..).

  • Yeah I just noticed this whole separate model=separate sales thing, I don't understand why the hell they sort it this way on there, it's just stupid and confusing.

Either way though in addition to PSP2k being way ahead of any DS model, both the 80 Gig PS3 pack (15) and 40 Gig PS3 pack (32) are both ahead of the top selling Xbox 360 console, that being the elite bundle at 35 on the list. Those no way to really spin the fact that Sony did pretty solid indeed and better then MS, at least on Amazon.

    -WPack911

  • @Kokuryukai: "Nice too see Sony doing a lot better now, as for Microsoft seems like the 360 hardware sales are slowing down - no surprise there - there are no games to look forward to next year - well besides Ninja Gaiden 2"

    Grand Theft Auto
    Lost Odyssey
    Devil May Cry
    Last Remnant
    Silent Hill

Just off the top of my head.

  • @Rurouni: No, the only way to get WiFi with the 360 is to use that wireless adapter. You can't use anything else.

  • Silly PS3 buyers, don't you know those controllers you are buying are "last-gen"?

  • @Rurouni

At least up to this summer the only wireless network option available that wasn't a network cable to wireless adapter piece of hardware was the "Offical" 360 wireless adapter. I haven't heard of any success stories plugging a usb wireless adapter into a 360 after that. I picked one up this summer just to stream vid content on my other xbox 360 to the tv room. So far so good, but yeah it was probably an on purpose oversight by Microsoft to not include "wireless" access in-box. It's really my 2nd major gripe about the system besides the obvious hard drive gouging.

  • @WPack911:
You should do a little further research, Amazon have no stock on any of the DS models and just redirects customers to other retailers... so no shit they won't sell. The Amazon still have plenty of PSP2K's in stock though...

  • @DefHamsterJam:
Oh, you beat me to it, teehee

  • @nya-chama: Thats what i tought...

  • Oh and my mom that wants a Wii got a DS for Christmas. I didn't even get a chance to finally try Brain Age she was so entrhalled. Oddly enough same thing happened to me when she picked up the GameBoy she got me for my birthday and tried out Tetris 20 years ago. Yet this is the same woman that scoffed at me when I begged her to buy Phantasy Star II for $79 dollars for me back in the late 80's.

  • @Lackshmana:
Of the games you listed only Lost Odyssey is exclusive and that is for now. Plus I have not heard that great of things about that game and there's this little RPG game for PS3 coming down the road named FFXIII that is set to blow it out of the water. The PS3 also has next year off the top of my head:
    MGS4
    Haze
    LittleBigPlanet
    GT5 Prologue
    Home

Those are just the exclusives I can think of at the moment.

    -WPack911

  • @Lackshmana: I am talking about exclusive games for the 360 to look forward to...

  • WOW, it seen like the Ps3 outsold the 360 on console. For what is Amazon.

  • @nya-chama:

Umm, if they had "no stock" then why are so many of the DS model's listed in this best selling list on the 3rd page? I like the DS more then the PSP FYI. I don't even own a PSP yet, but it sold well and so did the PS3, so Sony did well on Amazon this holiday bottom line, weather you like it or not it's true.

    -WPack911

  • @WPack911:
I'm not making any argument, I'm stating fact. When you consider the DS sold 1.53 million and the PSP sold 567k in the month of November, of course the DS in gonna stay in the bestsellers list... PLEASE try clicking "Add to cart" in any of the DS models if you can... all you get instead is a "see all buying options".

    P.S
Oh, and check right now, DS crimson and black overtook the PSP

  • Image of DaiMacculate DaiMacculate at 05:43 PM on 12/26/07 *

@darkslide: Google "GlovePIE" and have a computer with bluetooth, isn't too hard.

  • @WPack911:
Oh and I think it's great the PS3 did so well, no surprise there; price cut, a lot of new games. But when I heard the PSP beat the DS, you don't have to be Einstein to realise there is something fishy there...

  • @WPack911:
You know...it says WPACK911 in red above your comments. Why the hell do you take the time out to type it again in a less distinctive color at the bottom, when it does it automatically in red at the top?

  • Image of DaiMacculate DaiMacculate at 05:44 PM on 12/26/07 *

@Pornosaur: I had a friend in my neighborhood who had Phantasy Star II, but the night he came to sleep over so we could play it all night his system died...it was quite a bummer.

  • #19 on the list is the 80GB Sony PS3 w/Motorstorm bundled.
    #29 PS3 40GB w/Spiderman 3
    #34 Gamecube
    #35.The Xbox 360 Elite
    #63 PS2 silver
    #67 Xbox 360 Pro Bundle

Damn; The Gamecube outsold The 360 elite and the 360 pro bundles! Xbox 360 arcade was nowhere to be found on Amazons list.

    PS

THE PS3 OUTSOLD THE XBOX 360 WORLDWIDE FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Kokuryukai:

Some notable 2008 360 games not available on other consoles:

    Kingdom Under Fire
    World in Conflict
    Lost Odyssey
    Left 4 Dead
    Spinter Cell
    Fable 2
    Alan Wake
APB (the new game from the Crackdown guys)
    Ninja Gaiden 2
    Too Human
    Banjo 3
    Halo Wars
    Castle Crashers

And again, that's not counting any of the great 2008 multi-console games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, R6: Vegas 2, etc.

I'm certainly not trying to imply that the Wii or PS3 won't have great games only available to console users on those consoles, I'm just saying it's crazy to think the 360 doesn't have a great list of games to play in 2008.

  • @nya-chama:
I'll agree that the DS far outsold the PSP this holiday, there's just no way it couldn't, but the PSP is doing better then it was and that is good for a DS and probably future PSP owner like me because market competition pushes the market forward.

    @turkeyfunk:
I sign my name cause I like to piss people like you off, no I sign it cause i like to sign everything I write, if you have problem with that that's your problem.

-WPack911 (Oh no I did it again. *gasp*)

  • i'm confused... do none of you see the red/black DS combo at spot #10? Right above the PSP?

  • Now thats what I call interesting. The PSP 2k was in front of any Nintendo DS for the time of the holidays, but now, as the holidays are over, the DS Crimson&Black overtook it. hmmm

And 17 Wiis sold per second. Not too bad. Even if it had been 1 Wii every 17 seconds it would have been a fast selling machine. (Meanwhile here in Germany there are towers of Wii-consoles in the stores).

  • Japan America Others Total
    DS 319,209 905,868 821,575 2,046,652
    Wii 268,954 740,791 448,127 1,457,872
    PSP 175,346 278,968 271,056 725,370
    PS3 55,119 226,263 338,006 619,388
    360 8,580 367,304 218,636 594,520

  • If developers and pulishers continue to ignore the Wii or constantly stream crap to the console this year, I will be LIVID.

It's a good console, make some good games now that it's in people's hands, darn you.

  • Why is everyone saying that PSP beat DS on Amazon as per this list? NDS Lite Crimson & Black is #10 on the list above PSP2K which is on #11.

  • "17 per second when they were in stock."

So they sold ... 17 of them?

  • @phinehas:
I totally agree. I bought 6 games, all of 'em made by Nintendo.

But how should other companies make great software instead of being greedy when even Nintendo itself can't. While games like MP3 Corruption or Mario Galaxy are great, the updates for the console and the various channels aren't... And don't let me talk about online features and friend codes...

  • Sales rate isn't the same as total sales, so this isn't even as good of a trend tracking method as weekly sales. In fact the data isn't even valid for more than a few hours with Best Sellers lists in general on Amazon. Just FYI for people that don't use Amazon that may not know.

  • My dad owns a Wii (in addition to the 360, which he plays about 99% of the time) and I must say I am completely baffled by the popularity of the unit.

Wii Sports is interesting and cute but hardly compelling. Even when I try to look at it from the perspective of some average joe it just seems lame. Super Mario Galaxy is a tremendously good game but its not driving Wii sales. Neither is Metroid Prime 3 or for that matter any of the "gamer's games". Crud like Wii Sports and Wii Play is. The Remote is all finicky and I have to constantly move the sensor bar depending on where the person using the system is sitting.

Making a Mii is a blast and the different channels are polished and gorgeous (even though they are totally vapid - come on, Everybody Votes?) but thats not worth $250. Even as a casual gaming system I do not really see the point of the Wii.

  • Does this inclu
