Man, CES isn't for another two weeks and yet here we are with our first trailer for the upcoming rhythm game Patapon. A certain luck Editor got a preview copy that he is even now probably playing on his way to his festive holiday festivities. The design on this one looks great and ties in very nicely with Japan Studios' highly addictive and eternally cheerful Loco Roco. You can definitely tell they are part of the same family yet completely different in their gameplay. Considering how much I loved Loco Roco, this will be a must-have for my PSP.

This game... I must have it.
@Krackatoa: I, too, am hypnotized by it... I think I need to buy a PSP now... >_<
I love the little talk bubbles. I can't wait for this game!!
What sound! It's divine!
i dont want this, but welcome this kind of new IPs.
Hope the variety of music is as awesome as it is in Loco Roco. :)
the japanese version is great so far i'm just severely missing out on things cause i don't understand the text.. excellent rhythm game so far though
I find that music to be incredibly irritating. it would drive me crazy to have to listen to that for 10+ minutes
@Krackatoa:
I concure.
Fighting, RPG and Music.. wow
Loco Roco wasn't enough of a reason for me to get a PSP.
Patapon and Loco Roco is enough of a reason to get a PSP.
Looks amazing, right up my alley. Too bad I'll probably never buy a PSP.
This game looks fantastic. Sadly I don't own a PSP, and there's very few reasons to. I love musical games where it's more than 'play the music' (Rez, Lumines, games like this).
Im starting to become glad I bought a PSP last week....
published by sony, it will never come to xbla :( looks like i'm gonna have to get a psp after all....
Damnit Sony. Damnit, you're trying so hard to make me make room on my shelves for another handheld system. It is almost getting to be too much to bear. I may have to break down and buy a PSP next year if one or two more new IP games, like Patapon, surprise jump kick me in the face.
Yay. The wife just scored me a LE deep red PSP at Yamada Denki. Better fire off another email to get her to pick this up for me aswell! Sugoi ne?
Looks quite interesting. It's a shame that it was released for the PSP though.
Waaaauuuu!!!looks like a hot new IP,I hope many of us get this game,looks so fine and polish,don´t deserve to fail in the sales(even if in Japon don´t sold so well at the launch week)
@JayPea:
Insert Japanese culturally inspired stereotypical, sexist comment about wife here. :3
I would like to see this on the PS3 for download, perhaps the very same game but with HD visuals and cross compatible saving. If such happened for alot of PSP games i would be very happy, reverse remote play would solve it though.
Either way great game, hypnotic yet grating but highly addictive… Pon! Pon! Pata! Pon!. [a bit like Interpol actually]
It's a pretty interesting game, so far. I'm not too far into it, but it does, unfortunately, contian a little of the leveling that is inherent in many RPGs. Right now I'm kinda SOoL (Shit Out of Luck) in playing that game as, like usual, I've progressed to the point where my weak guys can't cope with the new enemies but I'm too lazy to crack out the kanji dictionary to understand what the hell I should do...
I like the design and concept of this over Locoroco (though the design is similar), but even though I haven't played this much I think Locoroco is a better game.
Sweeeet. If I can pry my hands off of playing Crush I'll pick this up when it comes out. Way to go with the new IP's PSP.
so now i have 4 reasons to get a psp:
1. Crisis Core
2. GoW: Chains of Olympus
3. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
4. and pata-pata-pata-PON
picking up a black slim with some christmas cash.
Be warned: its a rythm RTS.
Boss battles can be very unforgiving if you can't maintain the fever mode beat.
I don't think there is a game in existance that could benefit more from a demo than Patapon. Seeing as there's like 4-5 loco roco demos, I'm hoping for at least one!
It's such a shame when a game has something great going on visually, but forces you to focus to intently on the inputs you have to give that you can't pay attention to it.
@deathbunny: most people can see and hear at the same time can't they?
@the_sideburns: Ditto. :(
Very nice. The psp is really coming into its own. Maybe the same will happen to the PS3 one day? Lets hope.
Dear god, this is like at least two or three of my favorite genres awesomely executed and combined. Maybe I'll be buying a PSP after all...
@deathbunny: No no, that's not the concept of the game ... The indications of the notes that you see on screen appears when you press the buttons. It isn't a default button sequence "God of War style". The idea is that while you can appreciate everything that happens simultaneously on the screen, you hace to take decisions and transmit them following the rhythm of the musical sounds in the background. I am currently playing the Japanese version. "Super easy four button play"..? Cactaur is right. Sometimes it becomes hard as hell. And an excelent experience. Unfortunately I don't understand Japanese, and I can't move forward in the game
:(
@nonhuman:
*have
Ok.
I need this. I really hope patapon DX ultra-rythym comes to ps3, because I don't have the funds for a PSP.
Good for the PSP, they need more casual games to beat the casual-gaming handheld DS.
@Mongoosekun: Huh? Either your comment didn't make sense to begin with or I'm too distracted by 1upyours podcast to care. Please enlighten me with your prophecy. I won't be able to sleep otherwise.
This might be the game that will make me buy a PSP. It looks like the PSP library is finally filling out, so good for Sony. It seemed like after the PS3 came out that they sort of neglected to support it for a while.
Oh crap. I need a PSP.
@JayPea:
I was just teasing you about having her shop for you. I have to hear about how 'my wife...' in a Japanese context so often you don't want to know details. It's often equivalent to comments like 'her place is the kitchen' in the US. I played it safe and did not use slang terms above, since I assume some are actually offensive in 'public' speech. Ah, Japanese. :3
Must get this game.
There's too much engrish in this trailer, I hope I can bear it the final version...
Wow, that game looks and sounds awesome!
I'm a sucker for rhythm games. And now that more and more games I'm interested in are being released it's time that I start saving up money for a PSP. (it doesn't have a region code, right?!)
*thinks* I fear I will all go "pata pata patapon" when playing this game. Like the girl in the tv ad... orz
The rhythm is really catchy.
drool... I'm so glad everything isn't coming out in November...
this is the first game for psp that would make me buy one... that's saying a lot. looks amazing.
@Mongoosekun: The reason I'm emailing 'my wife' is that I'm in cold, rainy Wales and she's in +9 hours Saitama, Japan. Coupled with the fact that the red PSP is limited edition (hence the LE in the original post) Japan only. Oh yeah, I though Patapon looked like fun also ([www.jp.playstation.com])
Apology accepted.
I
WANT
THIS
GAME
EVEN
MORE
><
The music made my ears bleed, but the game looks like a blast.
Patapon sounds even better in french.
Yeah okay Sony you win.
I'm getting a PSP.
I love the art style, the music, the everything! Patapon will be in my PSP when it's released.
GOTY confirmed!
Life is good. I knew I made the right decision buying a PSP. Now to find a copy of LocoRoco at my GameStop to tide me over until this comes out...
I'm being totally honest here: this game has convinced me to get a PSP. I also really wanted Roco Loco, but I can't buy a system for one game. Patapon was the deal-maker for me. These are the type of games I was hoping would be on the Wii but its ironic that the real innovative developers are with Sony.
I've been playing it for a couple days now and I am most definitely hooked. Sure I can't read Japanese and this video just helped me realize there's an "equip all" option to make my equipping easier, but it's just such a beautiful and fun game! Hopefully, unlike Mr. Katamari, the devs of this game keeps making more new and innovative games.
@Furiursa: dammmn. i just sold mine! D:
*wish he can get patapon and loco roco on his DS now*
;_;
It looks pretty awesome; is that flashing border in the final game though...? >_>
