Nothing brightens up a day at Kotaku Tower like JOHNNY LEE, the man who can take a Wii and make magic happen. In this clip, Johnny shows us all how to take a Wii Remote, a sensor bar and a snappy pair of safety glasses, and use them to make a virtual reality display. Fantastic. If you're the impatient type, the first money shot's about 2:45 in.

Wow, Johnny does it again!!! Once again, a brilliant application.
Seriously that was some crazy stuff. I want to try that. so cool
Wow
NICE! He is unstoppable with his wii.
The money shot was about a million times better than I expected. It's excellent.
Has anybody played the Police 911 arcade games? The effect is sort of similar.
maybe this'll be the big thing next gen
I remember buying one of his $14 stedicams a while ago.
Wow. That was just trippy and fantastic.
But still.
I couldn't help but think "Virtual Boy" the whole time.
Either way, that was genius, pure jenius, with a capital J!
things like this always make me feel like a failure
I'm really shocked at how good it looked even when really close up, it just popped so much.
Would make one hell of a boxing game with something like that.
oh my
Why has this man not been bought up by Nintendo already? My only thoughts must be that they are already working on something like this (unlikely), or they're just too Japan-centric to let an Amercian tell them about their own hardware (very likely).
I just hope in future, something like this is utilised.
why the hell aren't developers smart enough to do shit liek this
Now that is really innovative!
I can really see this being the future of games.
I see advertisers using this similar technique in the near future.
Takes me back to Space harrier on Mastersystem lol
o.O
:O
O.o
This guy is amazing.
That would be awesome if that was implemented into some first person games.
NINTENDO, hire this guy now. if you put this into your games it will be insane. give this guy a job designing your equipment and you will not regret it
@Grocerspride: REZ would be a good start to eh?
@Kiriphii: Chinese-American.
And yeah the Japan Nintendo team is homogeneous.
Just imagine playing StarFox 64 in that view!.. That would be simply amazing.
Yes, yes yes. That was fantastic.
Awesome. Wii Boxing just seems so boring now that I've seen this. It would be 10 times better with this sort of technology involved.
This guy is brilliant. First he makes his own version of microsoft surface using the wiimote and now he managed to out do himself with this. It is crazy why he is still just there making vids for youtube.
@Clarke:
You knew what I meant though :P
It just strikes me as odd that they'd listen to the same old ideas rather tha have truly innovative software for a innovative console like the Wii. I just love the ideas that I have on how it could be used for a fantastic Star Fox game, or maybe F-Zero.. there are so many options.
But instead we're stuck with; 'Bash the bad guy three times to get a Star', which was my only real gripe after completing Super Mario Galaxy.
whaaaaaaaat the helllllllll. Can someone hire this guy please!!!!!
This guy is brilliant. All of his work I have seen so far really show what the Wii remote is really capable of and he even shows off his secrets! Can't wait to see what else he comes up with in the future.
This is outstanding. This man is an innovative tech god.
Dear god, all a developer has to do is include an IR type ear mounted/head mounted device and make sure they have an extra Wiimote for setting on the TV. (Probably a plastic stand for the reciever Wiimote as well, to ensure consistent measurements.) UMBRELLA CHRONICLES 3D AWARDED BEST GAME EV444RrrRRrr. R.
This man is a serious technical genius.
Somebody pick him up asap for a job and pay him massive muniez.
its a window into another world like in the golden compass!!!
Wow, he just made the Wii better than Nintendo did!
Good stuff!
@burningranger01: If this was done with rez my brain would explode with sheer unadulterated visual and audio joy.
OK, I am calling it. The first console developer to hire this man, WINS!
I can see Microsoft putting this in their next console with the sensors on the xbox live headset.
You should be ashamed Nintendo. You have all this potential just waiting to be harnessed. You should copy this guy, create some peripherals based on his ideas, and pitch them to developers. Stop settling for third party ports and shitty games like ninja bread man. Get those developers to start respecting the platform and start making creative games.
This was sooooooooooo cool!
and yet I dislike the idea of virtual reality =(
Johnny Chung Lee is now officially my hero
My dad would put his head through the TV watching a football game like that.
Nintendo should just hire this guy straight away, and start cashing in cause this stuff is sweeeeet.
Somebody give this guy a job a staff and a shitload of money like right now.
Wow, just wow.
One surprise after another from him. The other ones where cool, but not THAT practical for game application.
This on the other hand has A LOT of potential and doesn't require THAT much additonal hardware to be pack with a game that uses it. Though it does need one to have at least two controls...Nintendo should just get this guy to work for them, implement this idea into a game and release two style bundles, one with just the 'headset' and one with the 'headset and extra control'.
If Wii play manage to sell like crazy...I can only imagine a game using his!
He's still in school!?! Genius. I bet he already has dozens of job offers for when he graduates. Hopefully NIntendo is one.
This are the kinds of things that Nintendo should do in order to justify their lack of graphical power. If those simple tagets looked AMAZING in the demo, a Metroid Style game with GC graphs (to keep the framerate) would make the Wii the everything killer.
I don't know you guys, but for me this has a lot more potential and real usability than Augmented Reality. Go ahead Nintendo, just do it. And I'll forget the 2007. Really.
It's probably been said already, but:
Nintendo, please hire this guy. Give him a job or something. Before someone else steals him, haha
@BOMxAgonyxScenex:
I'd like to know the same thing as well.
@Witzbold:
Damn straight! Johnnys a genius!!!
I just showed this to my boss and two colleagues in the office and they all agree: this man is a frickin' genius. I'd so love to see this implemented in some Wii games.
This guy is a friggin genius. Nintendo would be fools not to hire him on. Just think of what this guy can accomplish with some serious money backing him...
After that happens someone can make a "Johnny Lee prints money" gif with cash pouring out of his mouth.
@burningranger01: (REZ would be a good start for this)
QUOTED FOR MOTHAFUCKIN' TRUTH
This dude is amazing. Honestly, I wonder if even Nintendo realized the possibilities of their own console.
I love you Johnny Lee.
You should work for Nintendo.
Hey nintendo get johnny on your team now :)
Dude, that is so cool.
Nintendo had better hire this guy ASAP.
I'm guessing this Wii stuff is just a hobby, which blows my mind. Kind of reminds me of John Carmack and Rocket Science -- the games are only there to keep him busy.
Wow.
I think we've just seen the Wii 2.
Space Harrier!
"If you're a Wii developer, and you're watching this: I wanna see some games!"
Fraking awesome. I completely agree with Paulmcg.
@klew: I agree whole heartedly with you. I makes me think am i really that stupid that I couldn't have thought this up myself, and the usual answer seems to be yes.
