This March Image Comics will begin publishing a six-issue mini-series based on the upcoming video game Dead Spce, according to Comic Book Resources. The comic books will lay out the story leading up to Electronic Art's sci-fi survival horror game.
When they did this for Mass Effect with a book I thought it was a bad idea... until I read the book, then I thought it was a great idea. The thing that made the Mass Effect book so brilliant was that you didn't absolutely need to read it to start playing the game, it just helped a whole lot. More importantly, those of us who did read the book were extra jazzed about playing the game to see what happened. I think it's great how these sort of literary prequels help to emphasize the storyline of a game rather than the mechanics and graphics.

Hmmm... I cant really jump on this video game book bandwagon. Its especially infuriating when a game has a "lacking" story and then a series of books clearly WRITTEN by someone comes out based on said game. *cough*HALOBOOKS*cough*
Wow I brain-farted out the fact that its a comic book, not a novel. I picked up the Resident Evil mags back in the day. Cant say they really increased my appreciation for the game (in retrospect the RE games are kind of infuriating), but they werent half bad reads...
I haven't heard of a half-decent space horror movie/game since the first Alien movie. I don't have high hopes here.
As the game will most likely suck, I have no desire to waste money on comics that will inhance the game. I'd rather they just spent more time on the game so there's no need to read the comics. Or just put the comics in the game. Comics game comics. That's too much repetition.
Somewhere on my bookshelves I still have my copy of the tales of the frontier booklet things that was given away with Elite 2. Must dig it out.
As the game will most likely NOT suck, I have a small desire to waste some money on a comic that will add a little more backstory to the game. I'm happy that two comics professional are spending the time to make the comic, and not members of the game team, so they can spend more time making the game, which has already been in development since the beginning of 2006.
Being informed is more fun than not.
@Vydas: Sorry, sorry. But being made by EA, and seeing some kinda interesting screens, but with copious amounts of brown makes me feel it will not be all that great. But no-one can know until it comes out. I just find that backstory shouldn't have to be added to a game, the game developers should be doing that, and if so recruit the proffesional comics artists/authors to put their work in the gam itself. I'm just very anti game accesories/novels/extra fluff. No offense intended, pure opinion. Merry Christmas.
I'm not a comic book person really, and frankly almost all space horror(in games) is cheese, however system shock was good and i heard good things about spacehulk.
That being said, it's not impossible this could be good. I think the genre has a lot of room for growth in the are of maturity. Just look at Unreal Tournament 3 and it's rich universe of subtle sci-fi flavor and characters, or halo 3... ok, I was being an ass there...
Art looks interesing... I'll probably get the comic even if I don't get the game. Oposite to Ehardergardens, I'm a very comic book person myself. :P
Also, I loved Event Horizon...
The game is very promising based on little developer tid-bits, though footage has been rather sparse this far.
I read the Mass Effect book when I was thinking "eeh...I don't really think I want this game." But after that book it was "Holy poo on a stick I gotta have it!!!" So I'll look forward to this comic series, see if it stirs my interest.
Haven't been able to find the Mass Effect book, yet, but apparently a new one is coming next summer to segue into the ME sequel, which hopefully means that ME2 isn't far behind :)
The style looks like the same person (from what I can tell) who did 30 days of night. I Loved that style, the story was lacking but I'm more of an art freak than anything.
Hell if the game looks "pretty" I'll probably pick it up.
Argh, people are really missing the point on this!
The fact that this is drawn by Ben Templesmith (as That Girl Hates You mentioned, the guy who did 30 Days of Night), we can expect amazing artwork with some pretty macabre horror.
I'm not usually the sort of person who picks up comic/book tie-ins, but this I will have to get.
@Kiriphii: Exactly. It's just good to see Templesmith keep getting more work. His work on Fell is terrific.
I've seen bits of the game and the screenshots and it looks freakin' great. I saw templesmith signing these posters at ComicCon and wondered what it was. Seems like EA is taking the time to get this new game right. So far this could be one of the coolest games coming out next year.
