The PlayStation 3 version of Epic Games' Unreal Tournament III has long been crowed about as the first game on Sony's console to support user created content, such as mods and maps. Today, owners of UTIII have their first taste of homebrewed PS3 add-ons, as FileFront presents the game's first player-created map, DM-Shrine, for download. The deathmatch map is designed for 2-6 players and was built by 23 year-old Thomas Browett of Nottingham.
FileFront has the download and installation instructions, which, curiously, point out that removable storage of some sort is required for import. Whether it be compact flash, Memory Stick or simply a USB thumb drive, it seems one can't simply download to the PS3's built-in mass storage via the internet browser. What's up with that?

Content already? Thats sweet, I'll have to check it out.
Who doesn't have a USB stick?
PS: The reason for no downloads on the Ps3?
It avoids viruses on a console.
I hope User-created mods that goes crazy comes soon. I want a teddy bear gun before I pick up my copy.
I don't care how it gets on the PS3 as long as it gets on there! As a creator myself this is really exciting!
meanwhile on PC...
"one can't simply download to the PS3's built-in mass storage"
"What's up with that?"
It appears the PS3's mass storage is in fact Mordor.
@Kirbytheslayer: Click the + to the right of my posts for ca...: Doh.
That Ps is totally a Pre-script, not a Post-script.
Justified error!
Sweet. Sticking it on there now.
@Kirbytheslayer: Click the + to the right of my posts for ca...: That makes sense but only if all the mods have to be downloaded through some source that verifies them or if the PS3 scans the files on removable storage first.
Nice step forward. If only UT3 was released in the UK, let alone if I would care about it. :P
... now its been a while. If I try to play against someone on this map. And I don' have it. Will my PS3 be good and DL for me?
That really grinds my "gears". They shouldn't have bothered to even releasing this year if you need a computer to download the mod to a PC first. No where on the box does it say "Mods require PC and X transfer device" How had would it have been to make mods and maps available on the PSN store? I can see why MS didn't want to let Epic do what their doing here.
@Kirbytheslayer: Click the + to the right of my posts for ca...: no it doesn't, if the virus gets on your USB stick it'll get on the PS3 anyway? It just takes one more step longer :P
I decided to get the PC UT3 because I was sick of waiting for the european PS3 release. And because they turned the speed down for PS3 and I couldn't find any clear information as to whether there was a mutator to fix it.
Posting some screenshots would be great
I've downloaded themes directly to my PS3 and used them right away.. Why should mods be any different??
@Kirbytheslayer: Click the + to the right of my posts for ca...: I don't have a USB stick (or a PS3). Never needed one before. Seems weird to require one to download for a system with a HDD.
I bet the removable storage only thing is some kind of liability protection for Sony/Epic. Unless this mod has been through the console certification, ESRB hoops then Sony and Epic have to be careful. Could you imagine a level titled "All Swastika's All The Time" for download in the PSN!? There would be many bricks shat.
I remember Epic saying that there were going to be mods that would be certified and available on the network, but that it would take time. If we can get fan made stuff, without having to have someone nanny the content, then I'll take what I can get.
@Zho: Like Crashlanding says.
It has to do with liability. Sony can say that the virus wasn't downloaded onto the console, the user transferred it onto there from their PC.
@mikeluisortega: how are you posting your comments? if it's via pc then you already have the means with which to put content on your ps3.
i reckon the reason for this pc thing is that mods typically live and die through websites like fileplanet and that, so that's where epic reckon the best exposure for their ut3 mods will be. also if you make one for yourself you're going to have to put in on a usb storage (unless you actually think it would be faster to upload to a website and then download it again with the ps3!) so they've made it universal... i heard the content creation thing was as simple as making it for both pc and ps3 and then either clicking 'make mod for pc' or 'make mod for ps3'... mind you i'm in the uk and haven't had even a whiff of ps3 ut3.. ffs
@Rabidsquirrel: That's a good question. I haven't read much about the whole PS3 UT3 mods thing, but having to manually download a mod every time you run into someone playing on a custom map, could be a bit of a pain.
Judging by the info that's been coming out, I'm going to assume that a manual download will be necessary.
Meh, Sony fix all our problems and little annoyances we have with their multitude of FW updates, just chillax.
for people complaining.... you do realize that your whining about something never having been done before on consoles and is amazingly cool right? Sure it would be nice to get it directly from the ps3, but i think we should still be in the DAMN, that's awesome phase.
Does anyone know if you can download anyhing through the ps3's browser(and i'm not talking about the PS Store), and if so where it stores it?
weLL IT IS PROBALLY JUST FOR NOW. i MEAN I CAN DOWNLOAD other stuff directly on the ps3 like themes and movies so i think it will be a matter of time before the mods are like that
@Ehardergardens: Yes you can just go to the internet icon click on it and go to a website. But it only downloads certain file types.
Although it seemed to not work correctly after a certain patch ut4k had the great feature of downloading mod files being played when you joined a game. After a while it didn't seem to keep them and it always redownloaded the maps/files over and over despite having the exact same version of the map played previously. This would be very neat to implement and have a popup asking if you wanted to or not when it found new files.
I believe Team Fortress 2 does this.
This is great for those folks who bought the 40gb ps3 which doesn't have removable storage slots...
@Achaemenid: Nice step forward. If only UT3 was released in the UK, let alone if I would care about it. :P
Luckily, us Aussies can order from sites like yesasia.com. I don't know why Europeans (and Brits) can't, but it's good for us. Without it, I'd have to wait until Feb/March for GT5P. And that'd make me sad. :(
@McWhertor: it seems one can't simply download to the PS3's built-in mass storage via the internet browser
That's the same with all "web" content on the PS3. I'm hoping that they allow you to download videos, music, etc directly to the PS3's HDD soon. Especially for videos from GameTrailers, etc.
But I'm not holding my breath for it.
@Cloral:
You have USB slots, no? You can use a USB flash drive.
@Cloral: I know, because USB storage hasn't been invented yet.
The reason you can't use the build in web browser to dl mods is because the web browser doesn't allow you to save to a specific directory, which is needed for the game to find the content. Memory sticks/cards are mounted as if they are part of the file system, allowing the data to be placed in the correct location.
The same thing happens if you want to copy a saved game from another console or the internet.
For fanboy apologist: Farcry on 360 had user created maps that you could download directly to your 360 and play without the need of another device, Why couldn't Epic who is way batter then ubisoft figure out a more convenient way for us to use DLC? On top of that on a system that comes with a harddrive standard. There is no excuse for this at all.
@Ehardergardens: for people complaining.... you do realize that your whining about something never having been done before on consoles and is amazingly cool right?
I hadn't thought of it that way. I'm guessing, future updates to UT3 will allow you to download PS3 mods directly (as PC FPS games have done for years) when you encounter a mod in a map cycle that you haven't played before. Anyway, that's what I'd do if I was Epic.
Guys, it was announced that if you join a server running a mod or map that you don't have, it will download to your hard drive in game like the PC one does. This is only meant for if you want to download the map before joining a server running it.
@mikeluisortega: It's maps, not Mods that Far Cry had.
While both Far Cry an UTIII use the map toolset, the UTIII allows for modification on a fundamental level if the modder so chooses.
@mikeluisortega:
You do know the USB drive/memory stick/etc is only necessary to import the file, right? I'm pretty sure it still gets STORED on the system.
@Doshu: Simple. More expensive (shipping) and not worth the hassle.
@mikeluisortega: Maps and mods are different.
@mikeluisortega: Why couldn't Epic who is way batter then ubisoft figure out a more convenient way for us to use DLC? On top of that on a system that comes with a harddrive standard. There is no excuse for this at all.
I don't know. Maybe because Epic haven't done this before? Or because it hasn't been done on this console before?
I agree, the mechanisms for downloading mods into games have been around on PCs for ages. But this stuff is still very new in the console world.
I'm not apologising for them not having this sorted though. I do understand this stuff can take time to work out, and I'd rather get the game earlier and have this sort of stuff worked out later (if that's what it takes). But I still expect all game developers to work this sort of shit out to give all of us (gamers) a better (and seamless) experience.
@Achaemenid: Simple. More expensive (shipping) and not worth the hassle.
Umm, yesasia has free shipping, the games are often out earlier (ie. my GT5P has already been shipped "free", but I'd be waiting until next year for it in Australia) and all games are significantly cheaper (AU$65-75 compared to AU$90-110). With the current high value of the AU$, it's a no-brainer.
Trying not to be a walking ad for them, but I really can't see the hassle with getting region free games cheaper and earlier. Oh, and they do have competitors (play-asia.com) with very similar deals.
But I'm an impulse buy sorta person (with a high enough salary to be dangerous), so I'll still buy the "Aussie" version if it's out at the same time.
"The deathmatch map is designed for 2-6 players and was built by 23 year-old Thomas Browett of Nottingham"
So he made a map no? I know farcry didn't have mods like UTIII but my complaint is Epic should have figured out the right way/better way to do DLC (wither it be Map or Mod) before releasing it on the PS3. How hard would it have been to have a built in map/mod browser built into the game with a site for everyone to upload their creations and review others? This is just another example of rush it out the door developing that has become the norm, get the game out the door and patch whats broken later ::coughHalocough::
There's more mods coming out tmr. according to Marc Rein
"We released the one map today and we have a few other things coming tomorrow.
"
I can't wait for the Gears of War mod.
@mikeluisortega: err.. who doesn't have a computer these days? o.0
@HikariOblivion: What if your PS3 is your computer?
@mikeluisortega: yeah, they were made with a rediculously simple mapmaker program, not actual mod tools, the way UT3 has it is that these are built in actual mod tools... if they had it with a browser type thing, they'd have to be responsible for everything that's put up, which obviously they can't, since with full control you get a bit beyond poorly drawn penises and swastikas
@mikeluisortega: well, you can probably download it in linux and put it on a flashdrive, then start up the XMB and import XD
@Cloral: it has storage slots, just less of them.. this is less of a problem than the Guncon3 which takes up 2 USB ports
@Doshu: So far I only knew play-asia. I'll check the one out you mentioned. Do they accept anything but credit cards? I dislike using them online.
having played the map, it's pretty good, not AMAZING, but isn't a boxmap or anything, it's a well designed arena map, very good for duel mode
@Achaemenid: Do they accept anything but credit cards? I dislike using them online.
IIRC, they actually support Paypal. I used a credit card, and the way they process them is a little sucky. I had to fax in a copy of the credit card (with the signature blacked out) for them to verify it. While fax is (strangely enough) probably more secure than internet, it was still a hassle. So far I've purchased GRAW2, R&C and 2x DS3s from them with no problems.
NOTE: I originally ordered R&C from there because our release date was weeks later than the US. But since they still had to source the game from the US, and then send it to me, I got it a few days after the Aussie release date. I'd say it's definitely worth it if you want cheaper games (and who doesn't?), and/or the difference in release dates is a month or more. The "free" shipping typically takes a week.
@GregoriusH: yeah there is, Speed Freak mutator makes UT3 hella fast on PS3. Of course, the same mutator on PC would still run faster overall but the PS3 version can blaze at a great speed and a good framerate.
@HikariOblivion: sweet, I'll be checking this out...like NOW.
Where the hell is the Kotaku UTIII clan and where is the Warhawk Clan. I play Warhawk almost daily and haven't seen a soul from Kotaku online. The people in my friends list haven't played for months with some still showing the rank-up glitch from the debut. Am I going to have to play with idiots and noObs forever?
Mod support on the PS3 has been a remarkably elegant PR maneuver for both Sony and Epic, scourging Microsoft's tender, unguarded flank with a profound populist message. Never mind that the PS3 version didn't actually support mods at launch, and even now that they are patching in their campaign promises you can't just download mods from the PlayStation browser and use them directly. Mods need to come over on memory cards for some inexplicable reason. Indeed, gamers lured by the promise of the $400 forty gig machine (or those who purchased the twenty-gig, as I did) don't even have the slots to use mods built in. Oh, you weren't aware? I'm sure they'll be glad to hear that.

@Striderhayasa:
I think a Kotaku UT3 clan is an awesome idea. I'd love to be a part of one, but I'm having a little issue with my in game friends list. The problem being that it doesn't seem to work. Anyone else having troubles adding friends/accepting friend requests in UT3 on the PS?
More related to this post, I just tried the new map and it's really cool. the game I joined was open, but it only had one other guy in it. He must have been there alone for a while because he seemed a little surprised when I ran up and shot him in the face. Anyway, we ended up having a nice little duel...I kinda got schooled, though. 17/10 I think.
@ KIRBYTHESLAYER: The PS3 web browser has a virus tool now. Also, many things are downloadable via the web browser, such as photos, music, videos, and XMB themes.
Why the UT3 mods are not downloadable? My guess is that Epic did not want to create a community site to host all the PS3-ready mods. Or something.
