Every year, the organisers of college football's various bowl games are allowed to spend some cash on the players taking part. It's part souvenir hunt, part pissing contest between the officials. This year, amongst the cameras and shopping sprees and hats and monogrammed travel bags was news that three bowls - Holiday, Allstate BCS National Championship and Valero Alamo - were getting Wiis for the competing teams. And the competing team's staff. And then some. All told, each bowl committee were able to get hold of around 250 Wiis. Each. That's 750 Wiis out of the retail channel. If you're going to vent your furious spleens, we'd advice you do so here. It's safer than doing it in-person.

I got love for college football. I am sure they had tremendous troubles securing their portion of wii's as well.
On the other hand, If I get to see brady or moss handling the nunchuck, I am all for the shortage.
Huuurgh... Uuuurk... SPLEEEEEEEEEEEEN!
...
Oh god, I think I went past venting and went straight into ejecting. You don't need your spleen, right? Ri-*thud*
I'm sure those 750 Wii's paid for a nice bit of advertising.
i'll boo them in person, i can take care of anything.
NERDS!!!!
No, I think I'll save my spleen for the Ebay scalpers.
But then, I've owned a Wii since the summer, so my rage is tempered.
Man, I really want to sell my Wii since it will be a while before another game comes out worth playing and that my friend is a manager at gamestop and I would pretty much know the moment they drop off the truck(ask the manager nicely and reserve alot of stuff he does it for good customers).
But the freakin thing is tied to My Nintendo crap and I have VC games that I can't transfer. Which I shouldn't have bought since emulators exist....anyways it makes it a lot harder to part with.
That's only 750 Wiis out of tens of thousands. Agreed scalpers are the worst party out of this Wii fiasco, even then I'll be keeping my spleen to prevent it going on eBay for more than the MRSP.
I'd probably be happy to vent in person. After all, this is the sport where my cynical English self must mock the players as they strap on three metric tonnes of padding. Damn pansies.
Of course, this is in no way validated by my ability to sit 6,000 miles away, anonymous behind the Internet. Honest.
See those little dots in the background? That's the sight of 750 Wiimotes flying into the air as all the straps break simultaneously.
Hm, so my entire college team and staff are getting Wiis? I should've been a walk-on.
Boo football, i got my wii already before this happened. watching football on tv sucks and boring at the same time.
Don't worry, you can vent twice. Most of them either already have a wii or don't want one, so they will be popping up on ebay real soon...
Most of these will end up on Ebay anyway. Aren't most of the recipients the core Xbox demographic after all?
*gets his torch and pitchfork*
Burn them...Burn them ALL!
...>_>
The real question now is how much is going to cost to build the bridge. Y'know, the one you can use to get over it.
I think it's cool that they're getting Wiis, but then again, I've had one since launch8)
@Baff:
Which is exactly what my room mate will be doing. And selling those absolutely sick Skullcandy Headphones he got...And he wouldn't even consider giving me a discount...Football - pshhhh.
@Ghede: You actually don't need your spleen. It's just nice for fighting off infections.
@RagnarokAngel: Lucky for you, then you can buy a good set of headphones instead! All joking aside, if you want headphones your best bet depends on the type you want. For sub $100 non-earbud types the best are Koss Porta-pro, Sennheiser PX100, and the Grado SR60. The specific one depends on the type of music and look you're going for. The Kosses are from the 80's and look it. The Senns are rather nice for general use in my opinion, and the Grados are best for rock music. For inner ear types, well, I don't know I don't really enjoy inner ear ones, but I hear good things about Etymotic Research for what it's worth.
@Anemone: ...wow, any excuse to unleash the inner audio-nerd, huh? :P
@InsomniaBob: Pretty much so ^_^ lol.
I'm a little biased, since I graduated from Ohio State, so I'm happy for my Buckeyes to be getting Wiis this year.
Though I'm still having a hard time picturing James Laurenitis playing a game of Mario Party 8 with Jim Tressel. Maybe that would be cause enough for a commercial of it's own?
No FCS love, eh?
so what.
I'm sure that they are only getting them Wii's so that they can work out over the off season... right?
Freaking jocks get all the breaks in life. =_=;;;
My Buckeyes can keep the Wiis as long as they don't embarrass themselves this year. And I ope they don't get them until after the game....PRACTICE HARD!!!
I wonder how many of those went on ebay?
At least the 'Horns are getting some Wiis.
I'll simply pretend all those people I play on SSBB (when it comes out) are all the people who recieved a free Wii or sold one (or more) on Ebay. Kirby'll eat anything. Even offensive linemen.
AND?
It's not like they did it just to smash them all up. Also not like the jacked a shipment from Japan either.
I would love to have gotten a console when my team made a bowl. But then again we didnt make any Bowls when I was in school so there you go. The price you pay when you are on a middle of the pack Big Ten Team.
And if it was a console that was in as much demand as a the Wii is I would have sold it in a heartbeat. 400 bucks would have ben nice and with the NCAA only letting is make $175 a month at the time,it was tough to have walking around money. Luckly I met my wife my Soph year and she had a pretty good job. lol
Yay! Gators! My alma mater! Much love for the picture choice, Luke! :D
There is no Wii shortage, it's just a preventative measure to keep Tebow from killing the entire planet if he tosses a wii-mote.
I blame most of the worlds problems on College Football.
The "rules" college football make absolutely no sense.
The head coach of the team isn't even allowed by rule to so much as take a kid out to McDonald's for dinner, but these corporate entities can throw all of that stuff in kid's faces without a problem? I just don't get it. And you're telling me there's not a "little extra something" stuffed inside some of those said travel bags?
I absolutely love the game of college football, but their systems are so, so screwed up. Whether it's the BCS or stuff like this, they are very strange.
Just another reason to hate jocks.
Wiis? What happened to just getting a medal or trophy or memento of some kind? The money behind CFB is a very shady thing..
Don't even think about it.I'm a Florida Gator fan.
that is ridiculous...they can go buy a wii anytime and they are given one for playing in a bowl game...i thought we couldnt pay college atheletes?
@rastaman4200: The Bowl system will make millions on these kids. Giving them a Wii or an iPod Touch is peanuts compared to the money being made from the college players. Plus, this is through the official BCS system, not a local business giving a player a $60,000 a year "internship."
They are mad cause you can only play Madden on a Wii and not their shitty college fooball ones. LOL
The two loves of my life, Gator football and video games, on one post? I can die happy now.
Ugh. Football AGAIN? Take off 20 pounds of that padding THEN show us how tough you are. Rugby team would own their asses. Oh, and eat my flame-resistant underwear.
I'm not going to even start the rant about how the BCS system is ruining our world... first screwing up college football even more and now this? This is the last straw!!!!!!!!
And this is another reason why us poor college fans will not see a quick end to the BCS.
Go Buckeyes!
Come on, do you really believe that Nintendo can't manufacture enough Wii's to fulfill demand? Of course they can, they just don't want to! People always want what they can't have, so Nintendo is intentionally making them scarce to keep the hype going.
come on , I am sure they probably contacted nintendo directly. With that many need they prob got direct from the factory.
Why isn't there any Wii's for the drama clubs production of Cats!?!? This is an outrage.
Can the BCS do a few more things to completely destroy our society?
750 out of 1.6 million a month?
Not that big of a deal.
Giving Wiis to football players? Can they even pronounce the name?
They couldn't have just gave them more copies of Madden?! :P
Oh come ON!
No one said it before me?
NO ONE?
Sigh, WII are the champions, my friends. That is pretty crazy though, I'd expect most of them would be Xbox Madden players but now they can be Wiimaddeners.
Go Gators! Good thing I got my Wii on the 3rd week of release.
