Jerry Bruckheimer and MTV have signed a deal whereby Bruckheimer will set up a gaming studio with the goal of making "new, original" titles (ie not games based on Bruckheimer's films). Speaking about the move, Bruckheimer says:
Video games represent a new and innovative medium for what we've always tried to do, which is to tell great stories. But this medium is unique in that it gives the player control over how those stories unfold. I look forward to working with MTV Games to create new original game stories, always looking for ways to innovate the medium. It's unclear just how much involvement Bruckheimer will have with the actual development of the games, but from the sounds of things he'll be working on at least the initial stages of the creative process, as well as overseeing the formation of his studio. Press release follows.
MTV GAMES AND JERRY BRUCKHEIMER ANNOUNCE BLOCKBUSTER PARTNERSHIP TO DEVELOP VIDEO GAMESLandmark Agreement Marks the Launch of Jerry Bruckheimer Game Studio with MTV Games
NEW YORK, December 19, 2007 - MTV Games, a division of Viacom Inc.'s (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) MTV Networks, today announced an exclusive deal with internationally renowned motion picture and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer to develop and create new and original video games, marking his first official foray into the gaming world. As part of this landmark agreement, Bruckheimer will build a game incubation studio with MTV Games, where a team of experienced video game experts, artists and storytellers will seek out and deliver new game concepts and intellectual property.
By joining MTV Games with Bruckheimer's blockbuster track record for creating successful entertainment properties in film and television, both new and experienced gamers can expect what promises to be some of the most entertaining, challenging, and unique games.
"Video games represent a new and innovative medium for what we've always tried to do, which is to tell great stories. But this medium is unique in that it gives the player control over how those stories unfold," said Jerry Bruckheimer. "I look forward to working with MTV Games to create new original game stories, always looking for ways to innovate the medium."
"Jerry Bruckheimer and his innate talent for developing wildly successful entertainment properties that range from action, reality, drama, sports, and comedy are the perfect complement to our vision for MTV Games and the experience our audiences truly crave," said Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Music & Logo Group. "There's a huge intersection between the fans of Bruckheimer films, our audience and gamers, making the potential for this partnership to be as explosive as one of his blockbuster films."
Executives from both MTV Games and Bruckheimer's gaming studio will work together on all phases of development — from concept to platform — as well as on the production, distribution deals and marketing elements, with the potential that some of the game concepts could migrate to other entertainment media including film and TV. Jeff Yapp, Executive Vice President, Programming Enterprises and Bob Picunko, Vice President Electronic Games & Interactive Products will oversee the relationship for MTV Games.
MTV Networks will support this venture across all its broadcast and digital platforms including CMT, MTV, Spike and VH1. Gaming is a focal point of MTV Networks' overall vertical entertainment strategy of super-serving its core audiences with engaging experiences across multiple platforms. In August of 2007, the company announced that it will invest more than $500 million over the next two years in the development and distribution of its Interactive Entertainment and Video Game business. MTV Games' recently released Rock Band from developers, Harmonix, which MTV Networks acquired in 2006, an all-new platform that allows music fans and gamers to interact with their favorite music like never before and garnered universal critical acclaim including: "Best of Show" at this year's Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2007, "Game of the Year for Teens" by USA Today, and called "this holiday season's most awesome video game ever" by SPIN Magazine.

THIS FALL...
SHIT WILL BLOW UP LIKE CRAZY.
AND ONLY ONE MAN CAN STOP IT.
AND THAT MAN IS....
*sound of record scratching*
carson daly?
*cue "jungle boogie" by kool & the gang*
that, that's the image i'm getting so far.
Great, a bunch of VG spin-offs of his movies!
Rappers of the Carribbean anybody?
@TheIrishNinja: You forgot to mention his female partner who portrays an unrealistic standard of beauty.
It seems like this same kind of announcement has been recycled for most of the big time directors in the past 3-4 years. Didn't Spielberg launch some huge game production deal a couple years back? Peter Jackson, too?
Is this a new trend? Hollywood producers and directors making games?
Maybe if we are lucky, we can get "Hitman The Movie: The game."
ahh yes video games do represent a "NEW" and "INNOVATIVE" medium. Glad famous people can tell us that otherwise I wouldn't have realized it.
The hell would Bruckheimer know about developing games?
MTV needs help playing music videos not games...
@TheIrishNinja: You also forgot to mention Eminem and Fred Durst being his sidekick.
This sounds awful. "MTV", "Bruckheimer", and "original" don't belong in the same sentence.
I'm imagining a game where a bunch of pirates have a death battle with the cockroaches from Joe's Apartment.
I have never been so underwhelmed by an announcement in my life.
why do i feel the need to throw up
This is a new trend that movie producers/makers think that making video games and movies are about the same. Now, prove it!
More "unique" games can only be a good thing, especially considering that most major game companies seem to be selling out to the highest bidder lately.
I remain hesitantly optimistic.
Shitacular.
Jerry Bruckheimer looks a lot like Chuck Norris in that picture.
Let's see... Since when did MTV have ANYTHING to do with videogames? More importantly, what does Jerry Bruckheimer know about videogames? As we've already established, nothing.
I'm going to remain bitter and sarcastic on this one. I'd rather be really surprised that either of these two parties could actually produce anything.
Let's start looking forward to 'CRIBS: The Game' and "Road Rules vs Some other douche-bags: Also The Game"
Yet another Hollywood figure coming to the realization that "video games are the future of entertainment" and deciding to spontaneously make super awesome, extremely cool and innovative games with sheer willpower, despite having no earthly clue about the developmental and creative process behind making games. This is stupid.
I feel like all these movie producers/directors getting into games run the same risk as actors thinking they can throw together an album and calling themselves a singer, too. Sometimes it works, but, man, is that rare!
It's a cold day in hell when Bruckheimer is the most original part of a team. Only MTV can pull that off.
MTV are quite strongly tied in the gaming business already, They do run Gametrailers + Xfire
Yay for giant corporations that have nothing to to do gaming throwing millions of dollars into a sink hole and giving consumers crappy games with massive budgets!
CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY THIS YEAR, BOYS!
@flukielukie: actually that is MTV's parent company of Viacom that controls xfire and gametrailers. but as for MTV getting into more video games. Jesus christ just what we need: "The Hills: The Video Game" now you too can play the role of vapid and spoiled rich kids that have zero personality.
Most of you are missing the point.
MTV aren't getting into publishing to milk their own properties. They're getting into publishing to be a competitive publisher. They're looking way beyond "The Hills", and more at stuff like this, which will be original content.
Original like guitar her....errr. i mean rockband?
@AnonymousNoob: yea, at first glance i thought it was an article about Chuck Norris playing a DS, but then i saw the title and moved on.
then came back to make sure it really was not HIM.
Well since it kinda worked for Vin Diesel why don't we give somebody who actually have some film credibility a chance... Can't we all just get along?!?
The only thing Bruckheimer knows about games is writing a check to whomever is developing the game he is putting his name on...
Jerry Bruckheimer has never done anything more than tell mediocre stories with awesome FX (and only produced them, at that). He's perfect for video games. Let's just hope he gives up on movies.
Mixed feelings. On the one hand, he does make good, popcorn fodder films. And there is definitely room for games that don't try to be revolutionary, just fun. On the other, people should stick with what they know. We don't need another big celebrity thinking games are simply another area for him to play around in. Does this make sense?
@Plunkett: I will accept that they are looking beyond The Hills when I see the game that looks beyond The Hills.
Until then I anticipate the critical failure and inexplicable commercial success of The Lauren Conrad Chronicles on a next-gen system near you.
Wow. I can't wait to see this arrangement go down in flames when the revenues for this new partnership end up being LESS THAN NOTHING. >_>
Oh, and before i forget: FU MTV.
The only director-type game producer worth anything is Hideo Kojima--mostly because he's so subtle and adept at breaking the "fourth wall". Otherwise, dev celebrity all comes from gameplay, about which I doubt Jerry Bruckheimer knows a damned thing.
All I can picture is shitty games along the same quality as their shitty movies. I will wait to see what this yields, but I'm not expecting some massive new IP to emerge.
WOW!!! MTV and Bruckheimer WTF? 50 bucks the name of the game going to be called Bad Music Explosion.
oh HELL no. fail fail fail.
"Original"... HA putting the word "original" anywhere NEAR the name Jerry Doucheheimer is a joke.
@UncleScrotar: I get it, you put Douche in his name. Yup, that was original.
