Solder tip #1, never allow heated soldering iron to rest against your pinkie.
It doesn't feel good. I was just trying to fix our garage door opener sensor (Its the thing the makes sure no dogs or children are standing under the garage door as it's closing) and sense I am both lazy and lack an electrical outlet anywhere near where the repair was being done, I decided to heat the soldering iron and then run across the garage and quickly solder a wire. After two attempts I managed to get the first of two wires fixed. On the second attempt with the second wire, the soldering iron slipped from my hand as I bent down and landed right on my extended pinkie, which I was apparently holding out while working, as if sipping tea. The iron quickly melted through the top layer of skin, leaving it marshmallow white before I grabbed it away. Boy, I hate burns.
