The old adage 'safety in numbers' doesn't just apply to camping trips and exploring spooky old mansions with your pseudo-anthropomorphic dog companion. For Eidos it also applies to console install bases, leading to the announcement that they would hold off most of their major PS3 releases until 2008, when they believe enough of the systems will be in player's hands to assure strong sales. Eidos CEO Jane Cavanagh commented on the strategy.
...as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date.
I'm actually surprised more companies haven't made similar statements. With the rising cost of creating games these days, publishers need to make sure their game can reach the widest audience. You never want to arrive first to the party. The more people there, the more dramatic your entrance. It's the game industry version of being fashionably late.
