Ehrgeiz: Don't Look Back In Anger

Wow, Ehrgeiz. There's a name I haven't heard in a while. Probably because I had it locked away in the darkest recesses of my memory, in a cramped little box where I also keep anything associated with Masters of Ter s K si. I keep them there because those two deserve each other.

Todd Ciolek over at GSW has brought back a lot of those bad memories with a detailed retrospective on the game. It's part of their 'Might Have Been' series, where games that could/should have been hits, but weren't, are examined.

Matches are chaotic, near-random melees, with fighters rolling, dodging, countering, leaping, flip-kicking, and throwing three different levels of punches or kicks.

It's simply too much for any balanced fighting game to handle, and Ehrgeiz doesn't even offer that pretense.

    No, no it did not.

Despite Ehrgeiz's failure, it's a lot more interesting looking back on games like this - maybe it's the sadist in me, but I'd much rather read up on why Ehrgeiz was complete pants than read another 12-page piece blowing sunshine up Final Fantasy VII's ass. Guess a good tragedy is also a good read.
