2001: Microsoft releases the XBOX console in the US, and it went on to sell 24 million units worldwide. Maybe the Xbox would not have done so well if it weren't for a certain launch title named Halo. Apparently it's about angels or something, which probably helped sales with the religious right.

How could Microsoft, a large corporation who made boring operating systems, ever pull of a sweet gaming machine that could compete against Sony and Nintendo? But in all reality, a company like Microsoft was in the perfect situation to make consoles. Their experience with software lead to the creation of great development tools and a little something called Xbox Live.
