Ozymandias, who incidentally I met at Penny Arcade Expo and seems like a nice guy, took some time out of his vacation in Peru (color me jealous), to shoot off some jibes at Nintendo's Wii in regards to the price of the console and its future.
The way Msoft's Ozy sees it, Nintendo is facing three risks:
The first, more crucial risk is the possibility that gamers just don't buy into the controller or that it doesn't live up to expectations for game control due to some inherent flaw.
Next, Ozy points out that Nintendo seems to be having trouble putting together the sort of robust online network that gamers have grown to expect in this generation of gaming. Ozy points to the use of Friend Codes as a possible sign of Nintendo's issues in this department.
Finally, Ozymandias says that while Nintendo is going to likely do well this holiday, what about two or three holidays from now when the innovative nature of the Wii has sort of run its course and people start to look beyond what, I think Ozy is sort of hinting is more gimmick than leap forward.
It's an interesting analysis. I think that what Nintendo is trying to do with this bit of disruptive technology is admirable, but it's certainly not without risk.
The third risk that Ozy points out is one I hadn't thought of. I'm not sure if it will be a big issue, it certainly didn't seem to be for the iPod and I think that's the closest model around to what Nintendo is trying to do in the game space.
Nintendo Wii at $249 Good... [Ozymandias]
