1UP.com's Jeremy Parish had been looking for a new DS Lite to replace a well-loved (and steadily deteriorating) Zelda-themed unit. He turned to eBay to fulfill his need for the recently-discontinued piece of tech, and found a model that appeared to fit the bill. More »

1Up has a running feature on worst-ever box cover art. It's been about six months since the last installation so they drop another dozen or so for us to laugh at. Yes, Okami's watermarked box makes the list. So does the Orange Box. Remember, just because it's bad box doesn't make it a bad game. In fact, a good game triumphing over bad packaging is ... even gooder! More »

GameTrailers TV isn't the only outlet getting a helping of Gears of War 2 video exclusivity, as 1UP—read GameVideos—is touting its own must see clip. It's hitting the internet at 10:30 PM Pacific Time, beating Spike TV's programming in some time zones. 1UP makes no promises about Cliffy B face time, sadly. But double the Gears of War 2 footage will make this Friday a night full of meat cubes and zipper-straining fan-boners. You are quite welcome for the imagery! It's the least I can do. More »

Simon Cox, Vice President of Content for the 1UP network, writes in his official 1UP blog that parent company Ziff Davis filing for bankruptcy isn't all gloom and doom. It's not like the staff of 1UP and EGM are going to be working out of refrigerator boxes when and living off government cheese. Business is, well, business as usual and bankruptcy can be a positive thing. How's that again, Mr. Cox? More »

The publisher of EGM, Games for Windows: The Official Magazine and 1UP.com has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Manhattan court today, in an attempt to restructure its sizable, long-term debt. Ziff Davis has, according to Bloomberg's report, filed papers indicating it has somewhere between $500 million and $1 billion in debt, with previous reports pegging the debt at around $400 million. More »

So, yes, the 1UP team (including EGM and Games for Windows) have ditched the 1-10 review scale. Whew, good! As we previously posted, in their place will be a school-like grading system, with titles ranked between A+ and F. The changes will take place during March on 1UP, in the April issue of EGM and the April/May issue of GFW. So if an "A+" is a "10", what is a "B" or a "B-" on 1UP's previous scale?

Scoring games using numbers? Sucks. It's a total mess. So it's probably with great pleasure that the 1UP team (including EGM and Games For Windows) have today announced that they're done with numbers. For good. In their place will be a school-like grading system, with titles ranked between A+ and F. The changes will take place during March on 1UP, in the April issue of EGM and the April/May issue of GFW. Best part? 1UP will be trawling through their reviews archives and updating the scores for every game they've ever reviewed, replacing the numerical value with a letter. 1UP's newly-promoted Editor-in-Chief, James Mielke, says:
...it'll more accurately convey how we feel about a game. I mean, we knew a 5 out of 10 meant 'average' to us, but no one else seemed to get the clue. So we're changing things around so that anyone who's gone to school will instantly know how we feel when they see our letter grade on a game review.
Smart move! Well done lads. More »

Earlier today, we posted about the plight of "tiny Brazilian blog" Blogeek, who, as you may remember, posted a pair of screen shots of Street Fighter IV yesterday. Amazingly, the site scooped 1UP to its own exclusive, claiming it had received the screens and details on the Capcom fighter from an "anonymous source." The site's owner, Douglas Pereira, wrote us this morning, crying out for help. "Ziff Davis is going after me. They're chasing me," he lamented. It was very heart-wrenching. More »

According to Next-Gen's blog, Capcom may be revealing a bit more of the recently announced Street Fighter IV this Thursday, including exactly how the game will look. How will the company show it off? Presumably via EGM magazine, by way of 1UP. The current issue of EGM teases in its closing comments "We're kicking off our first issue of the new year with a cover story so epic, we can't even tell you about it", signing off with a roman numeral three that looks suspiciously like it belongs in a Street Fighter logo. 1UP writes today that "you won't be disappointed" by the new EGM cover it will reveal on December 6th. Coincidence? Doubt it! More »

When EGM editor Shane Bettenhausen outlined the rumored doom of an unnamed Microsoft-published Xbox 360 title, the rumor mill went into overdrive. Fingers were pointed in the direction of Banjo Threeie, Fable 2, and Alan Wake, all of which were denied having been canceled. Ultimately, 1UP's cancellation detector pointed in the direction of Marvel Universe Online. But the EGM sourced rumor wasn't just focused solely on shuttered game development. It also hinted that an MS executive, near or on the level of Peter Moore, was on his or her way out. More »

Did you know that Banjo Threeie for the Xbox 360 was, for the course of about 72 hours, in speculative danger of being canceled? Neither did I. But, according to a remark from EGM executive editor Shane Bettenhausen in the most recent 1UP Yours podcast, a "big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time, that people are very excited for" was supposedly at risk of cancellation. That led some to believe that the third proper Banjo Kazooie game from the Microsoft owned Rare was on the chopping block. More »

1Up's Silent Hill 5 First Look

The folks at 1Up get a first look at Silent Hill 5 and man does it look great. From what I can see in the clips of the game shown throughout this piece, it's everything you are going to want from Silent Hill on a next gen platform. The scenes of Silent Hill changing to evil Silent Hill are delivered as promised, in real time while you are actually playing the game and draws directly from the method used in the Silent Hill movie. While it may have had it's faults, the film version did have a lot of interesting ways of treating the environment which translates quite nicely into the video game format. It's also nice to see that they are going back to the elements that made SH 2 the best in the series and steering away from the sometimes clunky mechanics of SH 4. If you are a Silent Hill fan, you're going to love this clip. What are you waiting for? Press play! More »

The publisher of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Games for Windows Magazine, Ziff-Davis Media, failed to make an interest payment yesterday and announced that it was negotiating with its lenders to restructure a rather sizable debt. The company, which also owns the web sites 1UP, FileFront, GameVideos, MyCheats and GameTab, owes some $390 million, a figure which CEO Josh Young says "was put on the company when it was a very different scale." The group now employs less than 300, down from 1200 at one point. More »

In an interview with 1Up, Sega has revealed that the mystery Marvel Comics superhero game being worked on by developer Edge of Reality will be starring everyone's favorite big green mean machine, The Incredible Hulk. The game is set to come out somewhere around the release of the new Hulk movie in June of next year. There is no word on which platforms the title will appear on but Sega did state that Amaze Entertainment is working on the PSP and DS versions of the game. More »

Kotakuite Daniel P. sends in this great Raving Rabbids cake that his wife made for his son Damien's first birthday. The egg shape is very nice, but I wonder what the rabbid is made of? I'm going to go with fondant since it seems that's what all these things are usually done with, but then it is from Germany so who knows what amazing sugar concoctions they may have come up with. Well, whatever it is it looks great and the addition of the 1Up mushroom is a great touch. Happy Birthday, Damien, may you have many years of awesome mom made game cakes ahead of you. Flynn De Marco More »

Over at forum NeoGAF, user "Stumpokapow" has created this chart showing Japanese Mario sales through the ages. You can see that New Super Mario Bros. is the second biggest seller, right behind Super Mario Bros. But the DS revision of the original classic is trailing by about two million. Amazing considering that SMB had a twenty year plus head start! Brian Ashcraft More »

1UP has an interview with Patrick Cervantes, Square Enix's marketing communications' manager, about box design - specifically, transforming Japanese box art into something appropriate for the Western market - and it's an interesting read. How did they get from bold, streamlined, and distinctive to almost rococo excess (though still distinctive)? Friday's 1Up Show contained a bit of a shock for the show's many fans. As the show was ending, News Editor and Kotaku alumnus Luke Smith announced that he would be leaving Ziff Davis and April 27th would be his last day. Although the end of the show seems like something out of an episode of The Office, you can rest assured that this is not a gag. There are currently no details as to why he's leaving or where he's going, but the subject of his departure will purportedly be discussed on next week's 1Up Yours podcast. Until then, we can only speculate although Luke did leave a message in the NeoGAF forums. More »

Sorry, Gears fans. Looks like Epic's gameplay tease from earlier might have been issued a tad prematurely. We wrote this morning about the planned Gears of War update that would include the new Annex game type and minor changes to Assassination due to hit Monday, April 9th, but it appears Epic Games may have jumped the gun. The update information on the official site has since been pulled completely. <a href="http://kotaku.com/249795/whoops-no-gears-of-war-update-next-week" title="Click here to read more about Whoops! Here's an excellent idea for you to blatantly steal when you get hitched. A soon to be married couple—who just happen to be friends with 1UP editor Mike Nelson—decided the best way to show their nerdy dedication to eachother was to adorn their wedding cake with their Miis. So, they contacted the team at Mii Sculptures and had themselves immortalized in bobbleheaded Mii form. <a href="http://kotaku.com/249793/custom-mii-cake-toppers-brilliant" title="Click here to read more about Custom Mii Cake Toppers... When the recent NPD sales figures for February hit last week, there was much doom and gloom cast over Sony's PLAYSTATION 3 performance. Selling a paltry 127,000 PS3s while stores were uncharacteristically rich with supply did not bode well for the console and fostered doubt that gamers were ready for PS3's $500 and $600 price points. More »
