In the five hours I spent at the airport outside Seoul, I've come to the conclusion that Korea seems like a groovy place. Good food, good people and a shitload of Samsung TVs. I need to go back, explore, feel things out and discover what's really going on. And so does Nintendo.
Back in July, Nintendo registered a Korean subsidiary with initial capital of 25 billion won (US $26 million). Korean gamers were truly excited about an actual Nintendo of Korea branch. The country had previously been a large black hole for the company. It still is, apparently. While Sony has been swift in its Korean campaign, Nintendo continues to fuddle around. The company doesn't have a concrete idea how to operate the Korean branch, leaving hated local distributor Daewon in charge. Nintendo explained:
We have got the company (Nintendo Korea) registered to establish it, but the company is not actually in operation yet. And we have not come up with a concrete idea about the operation schedule, so unfortunately we are not able to advise you as to when the company will start its business.
And millions and millions of Korean gamers go back to their computer screens, wondering what the big deal is with that DS thing. There's an opportunity here, Nintendo. Too bad you're blowing it.
