Commenter kingofallcosmos wins yesterday's contest with his comments on our story AP Stylebook gets Game (Boy).
I really agree that there needs to be a distinction between the two game types. Console and computer games are truly distinct groups. I don't mind "gamer" being inclusive of both groups, or electronic games referring to both groups, but the two groups are too different to completely share the same umbrella. When I speak of video games, I am never referring to computer games, however I find that when I am speaking to someone at work, I am not in the gaming industry, they often refer to computer games as video games. While I have nothing against computer games, the pure PC gamers are their own breed. There are ports, and there is some cross-pollination between the two, but the cultures are each very unique. Also, the term video means, "of or relating to television," which is a distinctly console gaming attribute. We may also want to include portable games as a third distinct group. The term "console" does not really seem to apply to portable games. But even then, portable games could include cell phone games, which are worlds apart from the DS or PSP. And don't even get us started on the terms "casual gamer" and "hardcore gamer."
