4 Color Rebellion is reporting what many of you lucky dogs with a svelte DS Lite might already know: some games seem to know when you're using a DS Lite over a regular DS.

Armed with my Phat DS and DS lite, I booted MKDS with both portables. On the original DS, Mario welcomed me with "Yahoo!" and some engine sounds, as usual. But on the DS lite, Mario changes his greeting to a familiar "Here we go!".

This troubles me a bit. You know, god love Nintendo, but they do seem to have a tendency to foist bulky beta units upon the gaming populace first, which then seems to fund development of the lither, sexier device that they will then ask earlier adopters to shovel out more cash for. We tend to swallow this by thinking of the later model (the DS Lite or the GBA SP) as a refinement model, not possible upon release. But this news seems to indicate that games released well before the DS Lite was announced were programmed to discern the difference, which means bilking gamers for the DS hardware twice was always a Nintendo strategy.
