All but the first four people in line are sitting in folding chairs. The first four are plopped on the cold pavement. Punishment? One of the guys tells me he got in line yesterday at 8:00 pm. He hasn't slept.
I stand at the end of the line and wait. A Sofmap employee pokes out from a doorway leading to the shop. Then another employee carrying a folding chair makes a beeline for me. He opens the chair and tells me to sit. I do.
It's sometime after 5:00 am, and the guy next to me is sleeping. He's wearing a black puffy coat and has two buds plugged in his ears. I can hear candy pop blaring. I look down at his blue Converse sneakers.
Further down, there's a cool guy in Burberry scarf, holding court. Three lackeys listen as the blowhard sets forth his opinion on everything.
"You know why the Xbox 360 failed?" he says, taking a drag on a cigarette. "There was no software at launch." The cherry burns orange, and the smoke's acrid odor drifts through the line. The lackeys just kinda sit there, too passive to even nod.
"Yodobashi Camera opens at seven. We should've gone there," Cool Guy says, snuffing out his cigarette.
Sofmap doesn't open until 11:00 am. At least I've got a folding chair. If I could only do turn down the music Converse was listening to.
