I've been playing through King Kong on the Playstation Portable and it's been a surprisingly satisfying experience so far, albeit one with a few issues.
Having played the game on both the Xbox 360 and the Game Boy Advance I knew to what dizzying heights and subterranean lows the game could go. So I started my PSP experience with a mostly open mind.
The first thing I noticed was during the lengthy intro I no longer had control over Jack. While this wasn't a big issue, I could stop thinking why they hell they decided to do that, it was so very distracting. And the bizarre kept a coming.
Shortly after landing on the island I noticed that unlike in the Xbox 360 version, I had no companions. While again, this wasn't a deal breaker, it made for a much disjointed story. Especially later in the game when I have to chase after a damsel in distress that I never get any screen time with.
The third thing I didn't like about the PSP version was its odd level display. Because the game was missing most of its cutscenes it was hard to tell during the saves where you were in the game.
Despite these relatively minor short-comings, I really enjoyed playing this title. Jack's controls were customizable enough to make play relatively painless and the looks of the console version translated well to the PSP.
While you're not going to mistake this portable version for its big brother, you will likely still find worth playing through. The one exception is the relatively short fight sequences with Kong. Fighting with the great ape is mostly an exercise is button mashing, though I friggin loved swinging through scenery.
I don't see myself replaying King Kong after I beat it, but I will certainly take the time to finish the game.
