Wired's look at the end of Asheron's Call 2 has writer Clive Thompson infiltrating the soon-to-be (Dec. 30) shut down MMO to find out what people are doing pre-Apocalypse. The answer? Not much. Thompson finds that few people are even logging in and that the game's economy got spoiled by the developers at the end because some "rare" items became common. The players Thompson talked to seem to have a quiet resolve about the game's conclusion: "Suddenly they [Asheron's Call inhabitants] seem nameless and ethereal, where once they were as real and important as our families, co-workers and Earth-realm friends." Would a Star Wars Galaxies joke be in poor taste?
