Tokyo's boys in blue arrested the owner of a maid operation in Akihabara for trafficking prostitution. The establishment, "@ Home Maid" (clever, eh?), had Chinese women dressed as maids, offering sexual services. The outfit was capitalizing on the otaku maid boom that has been penetrating comics, manga and video games.
Public adverts offered 40 minutes of maid massage action for around $90 US and 60 minutes for approx. $115US. Over a seven-month period, the business raked in over $700,000US. Sex clubs, however, are prohibited by the Entertainment Establishments Control Law. The police finally shut down the parlor, which was located one minute from Akihabara station.
Anyone who's ever been to Japan knows that sex is bought and sold in plain view. There are literally tens of thousands of these clubs in Tokyo alone, and hundreds of thousands across the country. So why was this one picked?
