I was cruising through the Reject Shop (think dollar store, but pricier) in a town north of Sydney a few weeks back when I stumbled upon an old-school-side-talking N-Gage. Imagine my delight when I discovered that it wasn t really the crap phone-game device by Nokia, but a cheap knock-off.
The aptly named "All-in-1 PS-336" features musical instruments, a calculator, clock, calendar, alarm, light and games, according to the garish packaging. The instructions were non-existent, but after a little bit of screwing around I was able to find 48 different games, each played in glorious non-bit form of graphics that featured tiny squares with dots in the center of them.
At first glance the games look like crap, but despite the low level graphics I was able to recognize Pole Position, Tanks, Tetris, Break-Out, Space Invaders, Frogger and Snake. Granted, the lack of any discernable graphics can cast a bit of a pall on the game play, but I actually had a bit of fun playing through the games.
Despite the horrid N-Gage design, the PS-336 may be worth the $5 or so I paid for it and did I mention it has a flashlight. Take notice Nintendo and Sony, they ve got a light on theirs.
