Where's the coolest place to unwind at TGS? For the last two days, I've been heading over to Konami's Metal Gear Room. The place looks like a pachinko parlor as designed by Kojima. There's a row of TVs and networked, Substance playing PS2 consoles. Konami staff and press are glued to the screens, battling each other in a game of capture the frog.
I suck. The Konami folkin trash me and bad. Sitting next to me is Noriaki Okamura, Metal Gear Acid's producer, who seems more animated today than during yesterday's interview. He cuts me down with an AK.
Bastard.
I'm not here to play games, though. I'm here to find out if Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to have 3D elements.
The trailer for MGS4 has been blowing folks away at the TGS. In it, a full metal eye patch has "solid eye system" written on it. "Solid Eye" was the code word for Acid's 3D capabilities.
Just behind me, director Shinta Nojiri is explaining the Acid's 3D capabilities to some cute thing. A voice says that she's on TV.
I lean over to Konami's PR guy, Marc Franklin, who's busy mowing down the blue team, and ask:
"What's up with 'solid eye' and the PS3?"
"What do you mean?"
"It says 'solid eye' on the PS3 trailer."
He pauses for a second, then turns. "That's an interesting question. How many times have you watched the trailer?"
Earlier, I asked someone at Kojima Productions this same question about 3D and the PS3 game. She stopped stone cold and asked me to send the question via email.
"Is Metal Gear Solid 4 going to be 3D?" I press.
"Nothing's been announced." Marc's taken his eyes off the monitor and is getting schooled royally by the red team. "We don't even have a launch date for the game," he continues.
Out of the corner of my eye, Kojima-san has entered the room. He's wearing a Union Jack t-shirt and talking with a staff member. I've already asked for an interview, but been told that his schedule is packed. The guy is standing five feet away.
"I was wondering if it would be alright to ask Kojima-san about the possibility of a Metal Gear movie? I interviewed a Japanese director that's friends with him and wants to make the Metal Gear movie."
"Sorry Brian, not today," Marc says.
"Does that mean the 'solid eye' reference is meaningless?" Last ditch hope.
"Kojima has already stated that the PSP and the P23 will be connective. Stay tunned to the website."
"Sure," I say, putting the pieces together and already having a gut feeling what the site will say.
