From shooters to RPGs, there are tons of keitai games. Some of them really work, but alot of them don t due to the cell phone's screen size or awkward controls. Konami's keitai take on "Beatmania II DX" really looks like a winner though.
Konami invented the "DJ-slash-game" genre with Beatmania back in 1998. As far as DJ-ing go, this game has skimped on the equipment — there's only one turntable and no mixing deck. You press buttons that correspond to the notes on the screen. Simple but fun and perfect for the music downloading keitais that are all the rage here in Japan.
New features include vibe mode to turn cell phones into rumble packs, which scores big points for using standard phone features in a clever fashion. There are loads of pre-loaded video game based songs like "Snake Eater" from Metal Gear Solid 3 and the Gradius theme song. And at only 315 yen (approx. $3) a month, users can play Beatmania until their thumbs fall off. Lord knows mine is a-hurting.
