If there is one thing that no video game can do without it's crates and barrels. Oh wait, that's two things. Look long enough and I'm pretty sure you'll find either a crate or a barrel lurking somewhere in just about every game. The generic containers litter every first-person shooter, whether it's set on mars or some Orwellean future Earth, and you can't have an action game or dungeon crawl without crates and barrels to break up in search of goodies.
